The San Diego Film Festival, produced by the San Diego Film Foundation, announced today that submissions are now being accepted for the Qualcomm Ultra HD 4K Mobile Challenge, a digital film competition to showcase the capabilities of the technology. Up to 15 entrants selected as finalists will create an Ultra HD 4K video using the Droid Turbo Ultra HD 4K smartphone by Motorola, powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor featuring Ultra HD/4K capabilities. A select panel of judges including Mark Cartier, Former Creative Executive, Paramount Pictures; Jeffrey Lyons, renowned film critic, and 7 Time Emmy Award Winning Executive Producer Hayma "Screech" Washington, will judge the contest. The three top finalists will be featured at a red carpet premiere at the ArcLight Theater in San Diego in May 2015. The first place winner will be awarded $5,000 and will receive a VIP package for the San Diego Film Festival in 2015.

As the Ultra HD 4K experience grows in popularity, technological options for creating and consuming media in this format have grown. Some movies and TV shows are being shot on Ultra HD 4K cameras now, but it's believed that it will be mobile devices with Ultra HD 4K recording capabilities that will be the key driver for the technology's adoption.

Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. (QTI) led the way in redefining the visual experience on mobile devices in 2013 by being the first company to design integrated Ultra HD 4K processing capabilities in a mobile processor, and has continued its 4K leadership with the Snapdragon 805 and 810 processors. Ultra HD 4K will raise the bar of visual experience technology for everything we do on mobile devices. The potential benefits of Ultra HD 4K technology can enable consumer to watch theatre quality movies on the go, stream family photos and movies to a Ultra HD 4K TV, enjoy more vivid images, read eBooks with print-quality fonts, and experience rich websites and immersive gaming in Ultra HD 4K resolution on their smartphones and tablets.

Tonya Mantooth, Vice President of the San Diego Film Festival, said, "We are thrilled to work with Qualcomm Technologies on this latest venture. Not only will the festival competitors get a great experience and possible cash winnings, but we will be able to introduce the 4K viewing experience to many who didn't even know this technology existed for phones."

"Ultra HD 4K technology in smartphones and tablets helps filmmakers pursue their craft in new, constantly evolving ways. Today's low budget films shot with consumer equipment might look better than big budget ones made less than ten years ago. I think we're all excited to see what these contestants can do," said Mark Cartier, judge.

"We're really excited about this contest because 4K is fundamentally changing the way we capture, record and PLAYBACK footage, making it virtually indistinguishable from real life. 4K user-generated videos, as well as movie studio titles, are more realistic, more entertaining and more appealing for all ages," said Raj Talluri, senior vice president of product management, Qualcomm Technologies.
