'THE HOBBIT' Rules Holiday Box Office with $29.8 Million; Disney's FROZEN Chills in Second

In a close race at this weekend's box office, Peter Jackson's THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG inched ahead of Disney's FROZEN, taking the top spot.

'THE HOBBIT' managed to gross $29.8 million by Sunday morning, while FROZEN chilled the remaining competition with $28.8 million.

From Academy Award-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson comes "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug," the second in a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien.

Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf the Grey, with Martin Freeman in the central role of Bilbo Baggins, and Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield. The international ensemble cast is led by Benedict Cumberbatch, Evangeline Lilly, Lee Pace, Luke Evans, Stephen Fry, Ken Stott, James Nesbitt, and Orlando Bloom as Legolas. The film also stars Mikael Persbrandt, Sylvester McCoy, Aidan Turner, Dean O'Gorman, Graham McTavish, Adam Brown, Peter Hambleton, John Callen, Mark Hadlow, Jed Brophy, William Kircher, Stephen Hunter, Ryan Gage, John Bell, Manu Bennett and Lawrence Makoare.

Walt Disney Animation Studios, the studio behind TANGLED and WRECK-IT RALPH, presents "Frozen," a stunning big-screen comedy adventure. Fearless optimist Anna (voice of Kristen Bell) sets off on an epic journey-teaming up with rugged mountain man Kristoff (voice of Jonathan Groff) and his loyal reindeer Sven-to find her sister Elsa (voice of Idina Menzel), whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom of Arendelle in eternal winter. Encountering Everest-like conditions, mystical trolls and a hilarious snowman named Olaf (voice of Josh Gad), Anna and Kristoff battle the elements in a race to save the kingdom.

Keanu Reeves' much-delayed 47 RONIN also finally opened this week - though not with the numbers Universal was most likely expecting. By the end of the holiday, the film has taken in just $20.5 million, $9.8 million of that total coming from this weekend, and claiming the ninth spot.

ANCHORMAN 2 took third with $20.1 million, and David O. Russell's star-studded ensemble film AMERICAN HUSTLE came in fourth with $19.5 million. THE WOLF OF WALL STREET rounded out the top five, grossing an additioanl $18.5 million.
