Scoop: AMERICAN IDOL on FOX - Tonight, May 7, 2014
With only two weeks left before the finale, the four remaining finalists perform LIVE for America's votes.
AMERICAN IDOL, the original music show phenomenon, is back with its search for a superstar. No other show in TV history has proven to be a force like AMERICAN IDOL. Returning in January 2014, American Idol XIII will continue to bring generations together to cheer and vote for their favorite contestants and crown America's next singing sensation.
This season, the show will return to its roots, focusing on the incredible young talent that has the potential to become a household name overnight. Hosted by Ryan Seacrest (@RyanSeacrest), and featuring judges Jennifer Lopez (@JLo), Keith Urban (@keithurban) and Harry Connick, Jr.(@HarryConnickJR), along with in-house mentor Randy Jackson (@yo_randyjackson), the contestants will receive encouragement, guidance and occasionally harsh, but constructive, criticism. This panel has the experience, chemistry and passion to guide the contestants to stardom, bringing back the classic American Idol that fans first fell in love with.
IDOL solidified its dominance as the No. 1 television show for nine consecutive seasons and, following its 12th season, still remains a Top 5 program. IDOL is the gold standard and the only TV singing competition show to produce hit recording artists. From the first-ever IDOL winner, Kelly Clarkson, who continues to dominate the charts with three Grammy Awards under her belt; to Season Four winner Carrie Underwood, who has sold 15 million albums worldwide, with 16 No. 1 singles and five Grammy Awards, to Season 11 winner Phillip Phillips, whose debut single, "Home," has become the best-selling single of any IDOL to date, American Idol is a bona fide cultural phenomenon.
IDOL's impact on the entertainment industry resonates beyond the scope of television. Over the past 12 seasons, IDOL finalists have released more than 200 albums, scored 408 No.1 Billboard hits, garnered more than 250 million iTunes downloads and have been certified with 95 Gold and 83 Platinum records. IDOL contestants have conquered Broadway, television and film and have won numerous awards and accolades, including American Country Music Awards, Country Music Awards, Grammy Awards and an Academy Award.
Every year, tens of thousands of hopefuls from across the nation audition for a shot to be the next singing superstar, but only a select few have what it takes to make it to the top. The show's judges have traveled across the country, with stops in Atlanta, GA; Austin, TX; Boston, MA; Detroit, MI; Omaha, NE, Salt Lake City, UT; and San Francisco, CA, searching for those who have the potential to transform from an everyday singer into a successful, Platinum-recording artist. Those who had the singing chops were invited to Hollywood in hopes of making their dream become a reality.
The judges have their say after every performance, but it's the viewing public who hold all the cards and determine who will advance to become a finalist and who will go home. Telephone, text message and online voting begin immediately after each live performance show, and the results are announced during the following night's live broadcast.
Eventually the competition is narrowed down to a winner, who is awarded a major recording contract with 19 Recordings and the American Idol title. Past winners Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Fantasia Barrino, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Hicks, Jordin Sparks, David Cook, Kris Allen, Lee DeWyze, Scotty McCreery, Phillips and Candice Glover, as well as fan-favorites Jennifer Hudson, Adam Lambert, Chris Daughtry and Katharine McPhee, have all become household names and made their marks on the recording industry.
In its quest for undiscovered talent, American Idol XIII embarked on its second "AMERICAN IDOL Audition Bus Tour" in August for a five-town mobile tour offering hopefuls another way to audition. American Idol XIII recently expanded the audition opportunities even further by bringing back the "Nominate An Idol" program, allowing family and friends to nominate individuals whom they think could be the next AMERICAN IDOL.
The American Idol mobile app includes special features that give fans the ultimate IDOL experience, allowing them to join real-time conversations on Facebook and Twitter, keep up with their favorite judges and contestants, enjoy and share exclusive videos and photos and cast all of their votes using the American Idol voting platform.
AMERICAN IDOL is produced by FremantleMedia North America and 19 Entertainment, a division of Core Media Group. The series was created by Simon Fuller and is executive produced by Simon Fuller, Cecile Frot-Coutaz, Trish Kinane, Per Blankens, Jesse Ignjatovic and Evan Prager.
