According to Deadline, Natalie Portman will play Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in the upcoming film ON THE BASIS OF SEX. DIARY OF A TEENAGE GIRL's Marielle Heller is in talks to direct.

The film "follows the travails of Ginsburg as she faced numerous obstacles to her fight for equal rights throughout her career." Ginsburg was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1993 by President Clinton; she was the second female justice (Sandra Day O'Connor was the first).

ON THE BASIS OF SEX, with a script by Daniel Stiepleman, is aiming to begin filming by the end of this year. Robert W. Cort is producing, with Ram Bergman as executive producer. Focus Features is in negotiations to finance.

Oscar-winner Portman makes her directorial debut with A TALE OF LOVE AND DARKNESS, out next week at Cannes, and will soon appear in WEIGHTLESS and JANE GOT A GUN. She is also producing PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES. Among her recent films are KNIGHT OF CUPS, THOR: THE DARK WORLD, NO STRINGS ATTACHED, I'M STILL HERE, BLACK SWAN and more.

The actress also starred on Broadway in THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK back in 1997 and appeared at the Public in THE SEAGULL in 2001.
