Deadline reports that Malcolm McDowell (Franklin & Bash) has signed on to star in Amazon's comedy pilot MOZART IN THE JUNGLE, opposite Gael García Bernal.

Paul Weitz will helm the project which is based on Blair Tindal's memoir. Roman Coppola, Jason Schwartzman and Alex Timbers will pen the pilot which centers on "sex, drugs and classical music and shows that what happens behind the curtains at the symphony can be just as captivating as what happens onstage."

McDowell will take on the role of Thomas, described as "a seasoned conductor being forced into retirement by the arrival of hotshot new conductor Rodrigo (Bernal)." The all-star cast includes Lola Kirke, Bernadette Peters, Saffron Burrows, Peter Vack and Hannah Dunne.

McDowell is known for the controversial films If...., O Lucky Man!, Caligula and A Clockwork Orange, for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Alex DeLarge.

He has also played varied roles in films and television series of different genres, including The Employer, Tank Girl, Franklin and Bash, Star Trek Generations, the television series Our Friends in the North, Entourage, Heroes, Metalocalypse, the animated film Bolt, and the 2007 remake of Halloween. He also appeared in the music video for the 2009 Slipknot song "Snuff" and narrated the 1982 documentary The Compleat Beatles.
