Deadline reports that Broadway vet Laurie Metcalf has signed on to star in a new comedy pilot for the CBS network titled THE MCCARTHYS. The actress will join previously announced cast members Jack McGee and Joey McIntyre in the half-hour project from Sony TV.

Metcalf was recently seen in the HBO comedy Getting On which just concluded its six-episode freshman run. No announcement has been made by the cable network as to the fate of the series.

Brian Gallivan wrote and co-executive produces the new CBS pilot which follows "a big Irish Catholic, sports-crazed Boston clan and the gay son whose greatest sin is not his sexuality but his desire to spend less time with his family."

Metcalf will portray the family matriarch, Marjorie McCarthy, decribed as a woman who "has no filter and loves having her gay son keep her company when her husband (McGee) and other kids are off coaching basketball games." Jacki Weaver took on the role in the original pilot.

Metcalf has a recurring role as Sheldon Cooper's (Jim Parsons) mother on the network's long-running comedy The Big Bang Theory. She recently appeared in the Steppenwolf Theatre Company's production of DETROIT and MCC Theatre's The Other Place.

The actress received a Tony nomination for her performance in NOVEMBER in 2008. Her other Broadway credits include BRIGHTON BEACH MEMOIR and MY THING OF LOVE. She is best known for her Emmy Award-winning role as Jackie on the sitcom "Roseanne."
