LA Phil Announces 2014-15 Season at Walt Disney Concert Hall

Music Director Gustavo Dudamel and President and CEO Deborah Borda today announced the 2014/15 season of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. This new season, the orchestra's 96th, is devoted to moving music forward by presenting an ever-evolving vision through a series of programs that demonstrate the artistry of the Los Angeles Philharmonic as a leading orchestra of the 21st century, under the baton of Gustavo Dudamel.

This season includes bold, new initiatives that experiment with the boundaries of orchestral presentation coupled with the LA Phil's signature programs. Inside the Music with Brian Lauritzen and in/SIGHT are new series platforms, both featuring Gustavo Dudamel and designed to provide multiple entry points into the concert experience through video installations, pre- and post-concert discussions, unique video content delivered before each performance and an online forum. Created to respond to an evolving audience, these Friday night series will offer greater context to Philharmonic listeners.

NEXT ON GRAND: Contemporary Americans will inaugurate a recurring festival focused on a single creative force or cultural element and led by Gustavo Dudamel. The festival represents an ambitious collaboration between the LA Phil and venues across Grand Avenue and, in its first year, will focus on the work of established, mid-career and emerging American composers. The festival will include 6 LA Phil world premiere commissions (3 conducted by Gustavo Dudamel), plus vocal, chamber and orchestral music, as well as video installations and performances by the Labe?ques, Roomful of Teeth, Ensemble Signal and the Calder Quartet among others.

In a first for the LA Phil, prominent Chinese guest artists will join the orchestra to celebrate the Chinese New Year with a program inviting this large and vital community into the Hall.

The LA Phil's dedication to contemporary composers and cutting-edge collaborations forms a major pillar of this new season, with over half of the concerts featuring works from living composers with 10 new commissions (including works from Philip Glass, Steven Mackey and Kaija Saariaho; 8 world premieres; 5 U.S. premieres and 7 West Coast premieres. The 10th birthday of the Walt Disney Concert Hall organ will be celebrated with the world premiere of Stephen Hartke's "Organ" Symphony.

Multi-disciplinary projects will be featured extensively throughout the season - Esa-Pekka Salonen will collaborate with artist Refik Anadol to incorporate a newly commissioned video into a unique production of Berlioz' Romeo and Juliet. The 70th birthday celebration for Michael Tilson Thomas includes a new staged production of Beethoven's sublime Missa Solemnis that includes video. The fully staged opera Alice in Wonderland by Unsuk Chin will receive its West Coast premiere. Directed by Netia Jones, the production will feature her unique use of video projection as demonstrated in the 2013/14 season opening night gala. In celebration of the Music Center's 50th anniversary, Gustavo Dudamel will lead a performance of Esa-Pekka Salonen's Helix from Walt Disney Concert Hall, with, for the very first time, the music being relayed live to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, where it will accompany a world premiere presentation from LA Dance Project.

In the spring of 2015, Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic will embark on their first tour to Asia together. The tour program will include City Noir, which was commissioned by the LA Phil from Creative Chair John Adams for Gustavo Dudamel's inaugural gala in October 2009. The 2009 performance was telecast internationally, reaching audiences in the United States, Europe, South America and Asia. The piece was then taken on Dudamel's first U.S. tour in 2010. This tour will visit Hong Kong, Seoul, Beijing and Tokyo.

Walt and Lilly Disney Chair Music Director Gustavo Dudamel conducts the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 12 weeks of subscription concerts featuring music from the masters, both traditional and contemporary, reflecting a diverse breadth of artistic vision. The 2014/15 season, Dudamel's sixth at the helm of the LA Phil, includes 10 commissions, 8 world premieres, 5 U.S. premieres and 7 West Coast premieres. Sharing the stage with Dudamel during the season are So Percussion, Cameron Carpenter, Gautier Capuc?on, Yefim Bronfman, Gerald Finley, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Katia and Marielle Labe?que, Roomful of Teeth, the Calder Quartet and more. In an ambitious and unprecedented collaboration across Grand Avenue's arts corridor - including Music Center Dance, LA Opera and Center Theatre Group - the LA Phil inaugurates a recurring festival that converges upon a creative force or cultural element. This season, the LA Phil embraces the theme of Contemporary Americans by focusing on the wildly creative music being made by American composers, both established (Reich, Glass, Wolfe/Lang/Gordon) and those with careers-in-the-making (Norman, Shaw, Dessner, etc.). Building Community through LA Phil Education Events

YOLA
YOLA Expands East of Downtown Los Angeles
YOLA (Youth Orchestra LA) - inspired by Music Director Gustavo Dudamel's artistic vision and experience in Venezuela's El Sistema - works with community partners to provide free instruments and high quality music instruction to over 600 students in Los Angeles communities that would not otherwise have access. The Los Angeles Philharmonic's YOLA initiative is operated in partnership with Harmony Project, Heart of Los Angeles (HOLA), the EXPO Center, a City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks facility, and the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts.

In partnership with the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts (LACHSA), the LA Phil has launched its third YOLA program - YOLA at LACHSA. Nestled on the campus of Cal State LA, LACHSA has provided powerful learning experiences for high school students within LA County in order for them to embrace and excel in the arts and academics while working towards their visions of the future. YOLA at LACHSA engages those high school students as mentors for elementary-aged YOLA students, who receive 15 hours of musical instruction and academic tutoring each week. This extends YOLA's total reach to over 600 students in six orchestras in some of the neediest communities in Los Angeles - East Los Angeles, South Los Angeles, and the Rampart District.

To support YOLA's expansion to neighborhoods east of downtown L.A., new partnerships were established at four elementary schools in the neighborhoods surrounding YOLA at LACHSA. Between these four new partner schools in East L.A. and 11 existing partner schools in neighborhoods surrounding YOLA at HOLA and YOLA at EXPO, the LA Phil will serve approximately 6,000 students from all three neighborhoods. LA Phil Teaching Artists work with students in their classrooms for 6- to 9-week residencies, classroom teachers attend professional development sessions, and students in grades three and above will visit Walt Disney Concert Hall in April to attend a free school-day concert by the LA Phil.

Toyota Symphonies for Youth featuring YOLA

The pioneering Toyota Symphonies for Youth series' second set of concerts in 2014/15 celebrates the connections and collaborations between traditions of orchestral music and America's national music, Jazz. These dynamic performances will feature special guest artists, true masters of the art of jazz performance and composition, alongside young musicians from Music Director Gustavo Dudamel's signature education program, YOLA (Youth Orchestra Los Angeles). Concerts take place on Saturday, December 6, 2014 and Saturday, December 13, 2014.

LA Phil Training Young Composers

New music, its creation and performance, is at the very heart of the LA Phil's identity. The innovative Composer Fellowship Program gives passionate young composers ages 15-18 the tools and the freedom to shape the future of music through an intensive multi-year curriculum including individual and group instruction, access to world-class artists, and two LA Phil premieres. New in 2013/14, the Associate Composer Program brings the LA Phil's resources to a wider audience of composers between 13 and 18, leveraging the resources and offerings of the LA Phil to nurture even more young composers.

Engaging Adults in New Ways

The LA Phil has a rich history of adult audience education - most notably through our popular pre-concert lecture and event series, Upbeat Live, and the post-concert, interactive Talkbacks featured in the Casual Friday subscription series - offering audiences the opportunity to deepen their understanding of symphonic music and connect with LA Phil musicians and guest artists. Building on our audiences' continued interest in learning more about the music they experience in the concert hall, the LA Phil announces the premiere of a new subscription series that offers patrons a guided, enriching and educational experience through four concerts of the 2014-15 season. Inside the Music with Brian Lauritzen, designed and hosted by KUSC's award-winning classical radio personality, offers a multilayered concert-going experience including a pre-concert video episode preparing audiences with exclusive and exciting exploration of the program a week before each performance; a tailored pre-concert lecture session with host Lauritzen at Walt Disney Concert Hall; an interactive post-concert discussion with host and artists immediately following each performance; and an online platform to engage with our host and music community outside of the concert hall.

TOYOTA SYMPHONIES FOR YOUTH:

The ultimate family event, combining fun and fantasy, the TSFY concert series at Walt Disney Concert Hall introduces the world of classical music to children through imaginative and original story-telling that features the Los Angeles Philharmonic in a theatrical setting. This series of captivating orchestral concerts for children (ages 5-11) is led by the LA Phil's Dudamel Conducting Fellows and directed by theater artists. Before every concert, from 10 to 11 am, Walt Disney Concert Hall becomes a musical playground with hands-on art making, musical activities, dance, and storytelling or theater. Workshops take place in the lobby spaces one hour prior to the performance.
