Science Channel has been named the official broadcast partner of the inaugural 2014 BREAKTHROUGH PRIZES, a one-of-a-kind global event which rewards and recognizes some of the greatest minds in the science world. Join celebrities from Hollywood and the world's greatest thinkers as they pay tribute to the brilliance, hard work and leadership of world-renowned scientists.

Hosted by actor Kevin Spacey, the awards will be presented by the Prize sponsors and by celebrities including Conan O'Brien, Glenn Close, Rob Lowe and Michael C. Hall. The event was produced and directed by Don Mischer, the producer and director of The Academy Awards among other television and live events. The world premiere special 2014 BREAKTHOUGH PRIZES will premiere on Science Channel tonight, January 27 at 9 PM ET/PT.

The 2014 Breakthrough Prizes are awarded to those who make major breakthroughs and contributions that represent significant advances in our fundamental knowledge of the world. At the ceremony, seven prizes (six for life sciences and one for psychics) of $3 million each will be awarded for a total of $21 million.

The Breakthrough Prize was founded by Sergey Brin and Anne Wojcicki, Jack Ma and Cathy Zhang, Yuri and Julia Milner, and Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan. It recognizes excellence in research aimed at curing intractable diseases and extending human life.

These awards not only celebrate scientists who are already in the field, but ultimately hope to generate excitement in the pursuit of science as a career for others around the world. Each Laureate of both awards will receive $3 million in grant money with no restrictions on fund usage. And Science Channel will allow viewers to see the winners and learn about their incredible journeys before anyone else.

The ceremony, which will take place at the NASA Ames Research Center in Northern California, will roll out the red carpet for one evening to celebrate the pinnacle of scientific innovation with celebrities of both worlds joining together for a generous cause.

"The greatest thinkers in the world today along with Hollywood's elite celebrate the global revolution taking place in the science world right now," said Debbie Adler Myers, General Manager and Executive Vice President of Science Channel. "Science Channel is the natural home for the stars of science and smart entertainment."
