According to a report by E! Online, Tony Award winner John Gallagher, Jr., who played opposite Lea Michele in Spring Awakening in 2006, will sing in his new role on HBO's THE NEWSROOM, written and produced by Aaron Sorkin.

"Aaron found out that Jeff [Daniels] is also a singer/songwriter and he puts out his own records," Gallagher told E!, "and then he found out that I play guitar and sing. So, one day, he said, 'Oh, there's going to be an episode when you and Jeff are jamming'…I found out that he wasn't kidding and that he had worked it into the script."

THE NEWSROOM premieres tonight, June 24, at 10 p.m. on HBO. The show focuses on a network anchor (Jeff Daniels), his new executive producer (Emily Mortimer), and their boss (Sam Waterston), and tracks their quixotic mission to do the news well in the face of corporate and commercial obstacles - not to mention their own personal entanglements.

Gallagher plays the role of a senior producer alongside a stage-star-studded cast including Daniels (God of Carnage), Waterston (Abe Lincoln in Illinois, Much Ado About Nothing), Alison Pill (Lieutenant of Inishmore, Miracle Worker) Thomas Sadoski (Other Desert Cities, House of Blue Leaves, Reasons to Be Pretty) and more. Plus creative theatre veterans Sorkin (A Few Good Men, The Farnsworth Invention) and Broadway producer Seth Rudin (The Book of Mormon, Death of Salesman, One Man, Two Guvnors) on the executive producing team. Screen vets Mortimer and Olivia Munn also co-star.

Aside from Spring Awakening, Gallagher appeared most recently in Broadway's Jerusalem and American Idiot, as well as Rabbit Hole. Off-Broadway he has taken the stage in Farragut North, Port Authority, Kimberly Akimbo, and more.
