X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST director Bryan Singer has made it known that Twitter is his method of choice to deliver big updates on the film: including when Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan agreed to reprise their roles, and when James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender and Nicholas Hoult had rejoined. Today, another huge casting announcement: Hugh Jackman has officially signed on to join the cast.

Singer tweeted: "I would officially like to welcome@RealHughJackman to the cast of #Xmen Days of Future Past. Very excited! More to come..."

With WOLVERVINE, an X-MEN spinoff set for release in 2013, it doesn't appear that Jackman will be departing the franchise in any way, any time soon.

But Singer isn't done with his merger of former X-MEN with the new ranks of younger mutants: last month, it was reported that he was currently in negotations with additional stars in the original feature film, including Halle Berry, James Marsden, and more.

All returning characters from the original X-MEN films in the early 2000s will most likely only be featured in an alternate, dystopian version of the world, in which giant robots called 'Sentinels' have come to eradicate the entire race of mutants.

The last installment of the franchise, X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, was set in 1962 when the United States government enlisted the help of Mutants with superhuman abilities to stop a malicious dictator who is determined to start world war III.

X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST will act as something of a sequel to 'First Class'. Days of Future Past is taken from two issues of Marvel Comics' Uncanny X-Men in 1981. The story was set in an alternate future in which surviving mutants were confined to concentration camps, while most of the X-Men had been killed. In order to stop this dismal future from unfolding, the X-Men had to stop a specific event from occurring in the past.
