Last year, FOX's first venture into live musicals, GREASE LIVE!, was a ratings bonanza, delivering 12.2 million total viewers during its January 31, 2016 broadcast. Speaking at the Television Critics Association winter press tour this month, FOX entertainment president David Madden teased that although the network has not yet completely solidified plans for its next live musical event, it is "so close" to revealing which show will be presented to viewers.

In September, GREASE LIVE directors Thomas Kail and Alex Rudzinski picked up the 2016 Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing For A Variety Special. The show also received four additional Emmy Awards for Outstanding Special Class Program, Outstanding Technical Direction, Camerawork, Video Control For A Limited Series, Movie Or Special, an Emmy for Outstanding Lighting Design/Lighting Direction For A Variety Special and David Korins picked up an Emmy for Outstanding Production Design For A Variety, Nonfiction, Event Or Award Special. The live production, from FOX, Paramount and producer Marc Platt, made TV history by earning a total of ten EMMY AWARD nominations, the most nominations ever received for a live musical.

Back in October, NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt announced that his network would present BYE BYE BIRDIE in 2017, starring pop star Jennifer Lopez in the role of "Rosie." The announcement was made ahead of the December live broadcast of HAIRSPRAY LIVE!
