According to EW, director JJ Abrams wants to increase the diversity within the STAR WARS franchise by including gay characters in future films. The most recent Star Wars film, Star Wars: The Force Awakens featured a female protagonist (Daisy Ridley) and two costars of color (Oscar Isaac and John Boyega). However, the director wants to make the franchise even more inclusive in the future.

At the US-Ireland Alliance Oscar Wilde Awards earlier this week, Abrams said, "To me the fun of Star Wars is exploring the possibilities, so it seems insanely narrow-minded to say that there wouldn't be a homosexual character in that world."
