According to The Daily Mail, departing Downton Abbey may still prove to have been a smart decision for Dan Stevens.

The publication is reporting that Stevens, who just wrapped THE HEIRESS on Broadway alongside Jessica Chastain, is being considered to star as the next 'Mr. Darcy' on the BBC's impending adaptation of P.D. James's novel DEATH COMES TO PEMBERLEY.

The 2011 work of fiction uses the same characters in Jane Austen's PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, but picks up six years later, following the Darcys and their children.

The site reports that Matthew Goode, Tom Hiddleston, and LES MISERABLES' Eddie Redmayne are also being considered for the new take on the iconic role.

Production is set to begin later this spring.

Stevens is best known for his role as 'Matthew Crawley' on DOWNTON ABBEY, which he announced he would not be returning to late last year. He is currently filming DreamWorks "The Fifth Estate", co-starring Benedict Cumberbatch.
