Dan Aykroyd on GHOSTBUSTERS 3: 'We're Closer Than We Ever Have Been'

In a recent interview with Esquire, famed comedian Dan Aykroyd announced that the team behind the long-rumored GHOSTBUSTERS 3, is making headway towards production. Aykroyd has been the threequel's biggest cheerleader for years - enlisting the likes of Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg (of THE OFFICE) and Etan Cohen to get the film rolling.

"I've worked on every draft in the last three years, as Ivan [Reitman, the director] has, and now we have a story and a draft that everybody seems to agree would make the third movie," Aykroyd told Esquire. "At this point, I think we're closer than we ever have been."

In October, it was reported the film would begin production next summer - now, it doesn't appear to be the case given the frustration of Aykroyd's words. He also goes on to make the reason the film hasn't come to fruition blatantly clear: Bill Murray.

"Had Billy chosen to do the Eisenberg/Stupnitsky script of two years ago, it would be out this summer, and it would be a massive hit. If Billy had said yes, it would have satisfied his performance and what he wanted in the movie, it would have satisfied his performing skill and how he wanted to be depicted in the movie, it would have satisfied the studio, the writers who wrote it, everybody — Ivan, me, Harold, we were all happy with it."
