As the Hacker turns out to be one of the most formidable villains thus far, Ryan and Mike are at their wits end that they are always two steps behind. And Ryan's subconscious starts to ask the startling question... is Joe the only one who really understands him?

In prison, Ryan informs Joe that Strauss is dead at the hand of his favorite student who, as it turns out, was not Joe. Joe is surprised, but is quickly distracted as the Warden arrives to tell him his death warrant has been issued and he needs to decide how he wants to die: Lethal Injection or the Electric Chair. His execution is set for seven days from then.

The Hacker rescues Duncan from a U.S. Marshall transport as he needs Duncan to help him track down "Luis" who made all the passports for Strauss. Luis is the last link to help him wipe the slate clean. After killing Luis' friends and his girlfriend, Duncan captures Luis and forces him to burn all the evidence. As he's about to kill him, Hacker calls and needs Luis for one last job.

Ryan and Mike are on a wild goose chase as they always seem to just miss the Hacker. Nick Donovan reappears in Mendez' place and, yes, you guessed it, he doesn't like that Ryan "doesn't play by the rules." After finally catching a break that the FBI server was hacked at a sourcing company, Max convinces Nick she can go back into the field. At the sourcing company, she comes face to face with the Hacker, but he quickly frames an analyst and then the company's boss for the crimes. Ryan isn't buying it. He knows the Hacker is way too meticulous to let them find the culprit that easy.

Ryan and Mike track down Duncan and Luis and apprehend Luis. Duncan shoots Ryan square in the chest, but he's fine and takes out Duncan. Ryan tries to get Luis to identify the Hacker, but all their transactions were done online. They never met. (So freaking scary!) In the end dream sequence, Ryan is shooting pool with Joe as they drink and Ryan tells Joe that he's the only one who understands him. The Hacker, or his fake name "Sam" as his colleagues call him, arrives home in time for bedtime for his children and his wife.

So we've learned a few things, the main one being, is cyber crime the scariest of them all? This is what nightmares are made of, some dude, hacking in and framing me for a crime with all the evidence to back it up and there's nothing anyone can do to dispute it. That is truly terrifying. I mean, I have to admit that Max bought into the Peter Collins framing a little too easily, and then only to believe that the boss, Tucker was the actual culprit? Really, Max? Maybe you do need some more time off. Ryan immediately knew it was a frame job, but who is really listening to him at this point, except Mike, and he and Mike are still mad at each other. Mike really is out of friends at this point. And yes, Tom has every right to be upset with him after leaving Max alone and sleeping with her, but don't play all righteous, Tom. You are watching her on surveillance... that you stole from a serial killer. And did Ryan seriously think visiting Joe wouldn't mess with his head? Is he actually going to mourn for Joe when he dies? I'm guessing that this season is going to end with his execution, no? I have to say, I'm still suspicious of Ryan's girlfriend, Gwen. I so hope I am wrong, but my nephew mentioned it a few weeks ago and the more I think about, the more I'm wondering if he is right. Lastly, in the question of cliche, do we really need the straight laced boss showing up who thinks Ryan is a wild card and needs to be disciplined, yet Ryan plays by his own set of rules? Really? Are we going to exhaust this? Come on, Following, you're better than that. Bring back, Mendez. At least she owned that Ryan was crazy and she supported him because he gets the job done.

Have we seen the last of Mark? Daisy? The Hacker "Sam" is pretty scary, but I am curious if he does have a connection to Joe. He must, right? Will we find out before Joe is executed? I'm thinking we have yet to see the last of Joe's "followers."
