When college students dabble in the dark arts and inadvertently trap themselves in an alternate reality with a maniacal killer, it's up to John (Matt Ryan) to save the day in tonight's episode of CONSTANTINE, "A Whole World Out There." Sit a spell and we'll get you caught up.

As college students, we all did stupid things when we were drunk, but I can honestly say uttering mystical incantations and getting trapped in an alternate world was never one of them. That's exactly where we kick off tonight's ep. Adam (Shamier Anderson) read about some guy who discovered alternate universes and after a few beers Adam and his friends Lily (Erinn Westbrook), Miranda (Skyler Day) and Carter (William R. Campbell) try the spell for themselves. And it works. Each of them is seemingly trapped in an alternate universe (Carter having the worst of it; he is trapped in a torture chamber with knives dripping blood, etc.). A young man begs Lily to hide him. A creepy guy (William Mapother as Jacob Shaw) approaches Miranda. She screams and they all return to the real world.

Back at the magic cabin, John is having a no pants weakend, stripped to his boxers (he still wears the shirt and tie) with a drink in hand.. His newly-dead pal Gary stares back at him from the reflection in the mirror (Gary was possessed by the hunger demon who finally consumed him a couple of eps back). Manny (Harold Perrineau) crashes the pity party. He is there to tell John that Ritchie (Jeremy Davies) might be in danger and in need of John's help. John kind of owes Ritchie. Ritchie, afterall, is the guy who cut the power during the pilot episode, allowing John to defeat the energy demon. The kids from the opening are in Ritchie's class. Adam is his teaching assistance.

Carl isn't going to be long for this world. He steps out of class, sees the creepy many in the reflection of a window and is instantly transported back to the other realm. The killer places a plastic bag over Carl's head, suffocating him. We cut back to the real world and Carl is dead.

And speaking of dead, John breaks the bad news about Gary and that he has it on good authority that Ritchie is next. Their chat is interrupted when Adam calls Ritchie to tell him he won't make office hours (dead friend and all). Lily, meanwhile, is opening a wardrobe and looking at the mirror hung on the inside door. She sees the murderer, screams and shuts the wardrobe door.

At Carl's memorial, Lily tries to tell Miranda what she saw. Miranda is in full denial. John confronts Lily. The only thing she tells him is they were at the cemetary trying to have a little fun. John goes there to explore and hears the sounds of flapping wings. Yep, it's Manny. He suggests that John should try and convince Ritchie to join the fight against the rising darkness. Before John can weigh-in on the issue, Manny has disappeared again, leaving John to search the crypt. He says an incantation. Writing is revealed on the floor that seems to startle and possibly scare him.

Miranda, meanwhile, decides the middle of the night is the perfect time to go to that dance studio to practice her moves. You know, the one with all the mirrors. The Darwin theory in action, folks. She sees his reflection and is transported back into his world. She finds herself standing next to the guy who had sought her help earlier. He asks her to open the cell door. She asks him why he can't do it himself and he shows her his arms. The killer has caught off the guy's hands. She screams and runs.

John confronts Ritchie about the kids' out of body travel spell. Ritchie frantically searches for a book in his clutter office. It's a journal written by Jacob Shaw that Adam used earlier that has the spell. Catch up with us, Ritchie. Shaw was on trial for killing his assistant when he fell into a coma and died. Ritchie tells John that the theory is that Shaw left his body and escaped into another realm to avoid his fate in this one.

Adam wants to go back into the other world and is trying to convince Lily to go with him again. He believe Miranda is trapped there now.

John is on the way to see Adam. Ritchie tells him he's been using the journal for his research. John immediately questions whether it's a good idea or not. Once you open a door, anyone can come in or get pulled out. Ritchie feels guilty and wants to close any doors before there is more blood on his hands.

Adam is back in the crypt and soon back into the other realm where he quickly locates Miranda. She's looking a little worse for the wear; there's a metal spike jutting out of her stomach. She tells Adam "he's after me."

Lily, meanwhile, is at the dance studio. She turns on the lights and screams upon seeing Miranda's bloody body.

John and Ritchie find Adam in a trance in the crypt. His arms are soon cut along with his throat. And with that, Ritchie now has an opening for a new T-A. Ritchie is wallowing in self-pity and guilt, John tells him he didn't make Adam do the ritual (or, for that matter, steal the journal from Ritchie's office).

In Lily's dorm, she is packing in a hurry. John and Ritchie arrive and give her the bad news.

Back in the other realm, Adam, Carter and Miranda are still trapped there (well, their souls and consciousnesses, anyway). Shaw explains to them he basically picks a weapon and hunts them down. Over and over again.

John takes Ritchie and Lily to the magic cabin in hopes that its walls will protect both of them from the other realm. Lily picks up her cell phone to call her mom. The reflective glass draws her in. She sees Shaw and runs through the house, finally hiding in a room. Adam is there.

John springs into action, grabbing candles and forming a circle. Ritchie tries to talk John out of going into the other realm, but John prevails. They find each other in the other realm and stick together for safety. They search the house and come to a dead end. Ritchie closes his eyes, consentrates and visualizes a door into existance. They come upon the scared guy from the beginning and he again asks them to hide him. John asks the guy his name. He gives an evil laugh before fading into the shadow. Shaw appears.

He quickly crucifies John to the fireplace mantle and slashes Ritchie's wrists. As Ritchie is bleeding, John reminds him that Ritchie has power in this realm and that he believes in him. Ritchie turns to the window and tells Shaw he forgot one thing when he created his world: the sun. Sunlight bursts forth. Ritchie changes Shaw's world. Flowers bloom, clouds part, Shaw disappears out of existance and his murder house begins to collapse. John and Ritchie escape. John runs back in to save Lily. Lily tries to grabe Adam and the rest of her friends. They close the door behind her, forever trapped in the house.

Lily wakes. Ritchie wants to stay behind. John wants him to come back. There is a tense couple of minutes as John watches his friend still in the trance, thinking he has lost another one of his mates. Ritchie eventually wakes up.

And we're back in Ritchie's class room. Rather than pushing play on a pre-recorded lecture, Ritchie puts the tape recorder away and begins to lecture and teach. It's about suffering, human longing and how our desires have the potential to corrupt our souls. Suffering will not end until we stop our desires.

Back in the magic cabin, John loosens his tie and pours another drink. Gary's reflection remains in the mirror.

And with that, a rather somber CONSTANTINE comes to a close. What did you think? Comment below and follow me @triggercric and follow @BWWTVWorld for all the latest updates, scoops and recaps.
