Aiken Supporters Not Impressed with Announcement of Campaign Reality TV Show

Following a political loss, former AMERICAN IDOL contesetant Clay Aiken announced that Esquire would air a reality TV show, rather than a BBC documentary as was originally planned, chronicling his political journey (as BroadwayWorld.com previously reported).

However, many of his campaign supporters are quite annoyed at the news of the change. Some say that they see it as disingenuous and that since he knew he would get a reality TV series, he DECEIVED voters and especially financial supporters. He received multiple notes from consitutents expressinge their disgust, and some are now asking to be cut from the upcoming show.

Steve Tyler, who coordinated an Aiken fundraiser in LA, is one of those who wants to be edited out. He said in an interview, "I think Clay's idea of documenting his race was a good one. It's very important that we learn just how much a candidate puts into the job from the very beginning. What I disagree with is him personally benefiting from that documentary (as a reality series). And those of us who signed releases were told it was for air on BBC only and not in the US."

In a note to Aiken, he said,

"Again, I am sorry for the loss on your bid for Congress, but apparently you had yourself covered with a reality TV show deal the entire time, just in case you didn't win. When we were asked to sign waivers by your film crew, we were told it was for a BBC documentary that would not air here in the United States."
