Mummies Of The World Exhibition To Open September 28 In Baltimore At The Maryland Science Center
The nationally recognized Mummies of the World exhibition will open at the Maryland Science Center (MSC), in Baltimore's Inner Harbor on Saturday, September 28, 2013. The presentation in Baltimore will mark the ninth and final stop of the exhibition's exclusive tour of the United States.
Mummies of the World is the largest exhibition of real mummies and related artifacts ever assembled, featuring an astounding collection of 150 real human and animal mummies and related artifacts from South America, Europe, Asia, Oceania and Egypt. Through modern science, the exhibition reveals how the study of mummies provides unprecedented insights into past cultures of ancient people from every region of the world. The exhibition reveals that mummification both through natural processes and intentional practices has taken place all over the globe, from the hot deserts of South America to remote European bogs.
"Mummies of the World is a truly incredible look at the history and science of mummification and the human race," said Van Reiner, President and CEO of the Maryland Science Center. "We are thrilled to give our visitors the rare opportunity to experience and learn from this amazing collection of real artifacts."
"We are excited to bring Mummies of the World to my home town of Baltimore," said Marc Corwin, president of American Exhibitions, Inc. "Most people think mummies are wrapped and come from Egypt, but mummies come from all over the world. The exhibition provides insight into the lives of these ancient people. Inside every mummy is a story waiting to be told, and Mummies of the World tells many stories."
The concept for the exhibition began with the German Mummy Project's discovery of 21 specimens within the Reiss-Engelhorn Museums of Mannheim, Germany in 2004. The mummy researchers used DNA analysis, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computer tomography (CT), radiocarbon dating and mass spectrometry to learn more, and engaged the cooperation of 21 world-renowned organizations in seven countries to make this exhibition possible.
Mummies of the World will be on display at The Maryland Science Center from September 28, 2013 through January 20, 2014. For more information, visit http://www.mdsci.org/ or www.mummiesoftheworld.com.
