Otello was presented by the Eastern Opera of New Jersey at the Brook Theater in Bound Brook on Friday, August 16th through Sunday, August 18th. The opera had the excellent accompaniment of the Baroque Orchestra of New Jersey. The performance, directed by Karole Lewis, was beautifully staged and a complete pleasure for the audience. The simple set, also designed by Lewis, was well utilized, versatile and served as an excellent backdrop for the opera.

Opera enthusiasts appreciated the opportunity to view the art at its best at a local New Jersey Theater. The Brook Theater has been in existence since 1927 as a show venue, serving at one time as a movie theater and is now a location for shows and concerts.

Otello, by Giuseppe Verdi is based on Shakespeare's play Othello. With the 200th Birthday Anniversary of Verdi, The Eastern Opera of New Jersey's performance of Otello was a fitting tribute to his work. Robert Butts, Conductor of the Baroque Orchestra of New Jersey provided a thoughtful narrative prior to each act. This allowed the audience to better understand and enjoy the classical performance.

We attended the show on Sunday, August 18th. Tenor, John Tedeschi mastered the role of Otello, delivering a powerful performance and lending the perfect blend musical triumph and drama. Tedeschi has a long and impressive stage career and is also a much sought after teacher.

Minsu Park, baritone, was the perfect Iago. Soprano, Victoria Wefer delivered a flawless performance as Desdemona. The entire cast and chorus assumed their roles with the captivating flair much admired by opera goers.

The Eastern Opera of New Jersey and The Baroque Orchestra of New Jersey provide excellent opportunities for Garden State residents to enjoy the best of the performing arts.
