FRANKENSTEIN, THE MUSICAL is based on the original novel by Mary Shelley and has music by Mark Baron, lyrics by Jeffrey Jackson, and a book by Jackson and Gary P. Cohen. The story follows Shelley's novel quite closely, and is ultimately about man reaching for the power of God, while battling the two deadly sins of greed and pride. Victor is a tragic character who means well. He simply wants to learn the secrets that would allow him to bring back to life someone he lost when he was young - his much-beloved mother. (more...)

San Francisco Opera presents the Company premiere of George Frideric Handel's comedy Partenope in six performances October 15-November 2, 2014 at the War Memorial Opera House. Winner of London's 2009 Olivier Award for 'Best New Production,' this production is directed by Christopher Alden with sets designed by Andrew Lieberman. Set in 1920s Paris, the production's surrealist aesthetic is inspired by the artwork of Dadaist Man Ray. Lyric soprano and baroque specialist Danielle de Niese stars in the title role opposite leading countertenor David Daniels, who thrilled audiences in 2011's Xerxes, as her suitor Arsace. Argentinean mezzo-soprano Daniela Mack is the crafty Rosmira, Arsace's scorned lover who attempts to use a cross-dressing disguise to enact her revenge. Countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo makes his Company debut as another of Partenope's admirers, Armindo, and tenor Alek Shrader is Emilio. Grammy-nominated American conductor Julian Wachner makes his San Francisco Opera debut with these performances. (more...)

Hughes, and stage direction by Copeland Woodruff and Giselle Ty. Through performance, this production investigates the culture of contemporary opera production and highlights where the influence of the composer ends and the director begins. Let's Make a Sandwich plays for one weekend only: Thursday through Saturday, September 25, 26 and 27, 2014, at 8 p.m. with an audience talk-back on Friday, September 26; all performances are in The Zack Box Theater at The Boston Conservatory, located at 8 The Fenway in Boston, MA. As has been the tradition for quite a few seasons, Theater at Monmouth ends its season with a production of one of Gilbert and Sullivan's comic operettas. This year's choice, The Sorcerer, is a frothy, pleasant entertainment enhanced by the strong vocal merits of much of the cast. The pristine neo- baroque gem of a theatre in Cumston Hall is the perfect venue for singing. Guerilla Opera presents Gallo: a fable in music in one act, a world premiere chamber opera with music and libretto by Rome-Prize winning composer Ken Ueno, and direction by Metropolitan Opera stage director Sarah Meyers. The world premiere chamber opera investigates how the landscape and man shape and transform each other. It also addresses the fundamental question of ontology, “the chicken or the egg,” and features a soprano in a Houdini box filled with Cheerios and a countertenor in a chicken suit. Gallo plays Thursday through Saturday, May 22-24 and 29-30, 2014 at 8 p.m. and Saturday, May 31 at 2 p.m. with talk-backs on Friday, May 23 and Saturday, May 24. All performances are in The Zack Box at The Boston Conservatory, 8 The Fenway, Boston, MA.
