Time Running Out for NYC Opera to Raise Funds
The Times reports that City Opera's board voted to start bankruptcy proceedings next week if it fails to raise $7 million by Monday. The opera will most likely not meet that goal after only raising about $1.5 million since it first made an urgent appeal for the $7 million this month.
Plácido Domingo, who launched his career at NYC Opera, tells the Associated Press:
"My early performances with New York City Opera were what really kicked off my international career, and I look back on those days with enormous pride. The company has done incredible work for so many decades, and it has played an essential role in New York's cultural scene for millions of opera lovers. It would be an absolute tragedy for that legacy to come to an end."
It's not too late to make a difference! We've raised $1.5 million so far outside of Kickstarter, but we still need your help. Every pledge on Kickstarter tells the world that you support the future of NYC Opera!
New York City Opera demonstrated how essential it is to the New York arts scene once again with its vibrant and bold production of Anna Nicole, which opened this week.
In The New York Times, Anthony Tommasini wrote that "Anna Nicole shows what we will be missing if City Opera folds," adding that "New York City Opera is again presenting a production that should not be missed."
Richard Thomas, Anna Nicole's librettist, reinforced the significance of this production when quoted in Businessweek: "That is why we need City Opera. We need an opera company that is not risk-averse."
New York City Opera is looking for support to produce its 2013-2014 Season.

Throughout its history as The People's Opera, NYC Opera has made opera accessible and affordable. And now NYC Opera needs help to produce its upcoming season.
NYC Opera has recently announced an urgent fundraising appeal - the Company needs to raise $7 million by the end of September; without these necessary funds it will have to suspend the balance of its 2013-2014 season after the production of the first opera of the season, Anna Nicole.
We are coming to the Kickstarter community to raise $1 million of that total to help us produce our 2013-2014 season.
We need the help of the people to save The People's Opera: audiences, artists, students, and everyone who cares about a world filled with exciting and innovative art. We are asking everyone to come together, to stand by The People's Opera, and help us produce our 2013-2014 season!
Our goal is to continue to push the boundaries of adventurous and thought-provoking opera in the 2013-2014 season and beyond. Donate at any level today and help ensure the future of opera in New York!
