Variety reports that Kenneth Branagh will develop and reportedly direct an adaptation of Eoin Colfer's popular young adult novel ARTEMIS FOWL for Disney Pictures.

The book series centers on the smart and sly 12-year-old criminal mastermind Artemis Fowl II, whose plot to extort gold from the secret Fairy People puts him directly in the cross-hairs of some of Earth's most dangerous creatures on earth.

Irish playwright Conor McPherson is currently in discussions to pen the script. Harvey Weinstein and Branagh are attached to produce.

The project will add to Branagh's busy film career, which includes directing a new adaptation of Agatha Christie's "Murder at the Orient Express" at 20th Century Fox.

Five-time Academy Award nominee Kenneth Branagh has directed and starred in several film adaptations of Shakespeare's plays, including HENRY V, MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING, OTHELLO, HAMLET, LOVE'S LABOUR'S LOST and AS YOU LIKE IT.
