Chattanooga Symphony & Opera Presents Aaron Copland's Lincoln Portrait, 10/10

The Chattanooga Symphony & Opera continues its commemoration of the Civil War sesquicentennial by presenting a Barnett & Company Masterworks concert featuring American composers and capped off with Copland's Lincoln Portrait, narrated by City of Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke.

Music Director Kayoko Dan has chosen three of Samuel Barber's works; the overture to The School for Scandal, his popular and pensive Adagio for Strings, and his Essay No. 1 for Orchestra. Modern composer John Adams' work, The Chairman Dances, is also featured. Concluding the concert is Aaron Copland's Lincoln Portrait, a work completed in 1942 as a commissioned musical portrait of an eminent American. Mayor Berke will narrate excerpts from some of Lincoln's greatest documents, including the Gettysburg Address. The piece will be accompanied by photochoreography created by James Westwater, titled The Eternal Struggle.

The mission of the Chattanooga Symphony & Opera is to inspire, engage, and enrich the greater Chattanooga community through music and music education.

The 2013-14 season marks 81 seasons for the CSO, which played its first concert on November 5, 1933. The CSO, conducted by Music Director Kayoko Dan, consists of top players from the Chattanooga area as well as from across the southern region. The CSO performs a full season of Masterworks, Pops, Chamber, and Volkswagen Series concerts from September through May, as well as a variety of community, education and engagement events throughout the year.
