Variety reports that The Weinstein Company is currently in negotiations to acquire the North American rights to a Mary Magdalene biopic. Rooney Mara is also in talks to take on the lead role.

Garth Davis is set to helm the project from See-Saw Films, who will team with Universal Pictures Intl. Helen Edmundson and Philippa Goslett will write the script to the project which is described as "an authentic and humanistic portrait of one of the most enigmatic and misunderstood spiritual figures in history." Production is scheduled to get underway next summer for a 2017 release.

According to the site, Universal will release the film in all international territories except Australia and New Zealand, where it will be handled by See-Saw's long-time partners Transmission Films.
