WFUV, New York (90.7 FM/wfuv.org) - Binky Griptite, longtime guitarist and emcee for The Dap-Kings, is bringing the funk to WFUV on Saturday nights between 8-11 p.m. The Boogie Down, a danceable blend of vintage soul and R&B, debuts on July 22. Paul Cavalconte's expanded, free-form Cavalcade will now be heard on Sundays from 8-11 p.m., beginning on July 23, followed by The Bottomless Pit with Marshall Crenshaw from 11 p.m.- midnight. UKNY with Kara Manning continues on Saturdays from 11 p.m.-midnight.

"We got to know Binky through our friendship with the late, beloved Sharon Jones," said WFUV Program Director Rita Houston. "He's an authentic personality with a great voice. He knows this music so well, and he's had a lifelong dream of being a radio DJ. Plus, what's better than a Saturday night soul party?"

"You could describe The Boogie Down as 'Mister Rogers meets Soul Train,'" according to Griptite. "I'm known as a soul man, but I've got varied tastes, and I hope to let that be heard on the show. There will be horns and organs, but also banjos and rock guitars, every once in awhile. Also, I'm really interested in helping the bands that are coming up now, so I'll play a fair amount of new indie soul from around the world."

"The Boogie Down adds a whole new dimension to WFUV and will be a good fit alongside Don McGee's Mixed Bag, which airs from 4-8 p.m. on Saturdays," added WFUV General Manager Chuck Singleton. "Weekends on WFUV are a showcase for the 'Art of the DJ,' where hosts project distinctive personalities through their music mix. That includes The Whole Wide World with Rita Houston and The Alternate Side with Russ Borris on Friday nights, Sunday Supper with John Platt, and, until recently, The Big Broadcast with the late Rich Conaty. Now The Boogie Down and Cavalcade become appointment listening in their own right."
