Gomez was first cast as the lead role in the Disney Channel series WIZARDS OF WAVERLY PLACE in 2007. This, alongside a recurring role on the Disney series Hannah Montana, led to Gomez becoming a teen star. She began appearing in various roles through the Disney channel, and later began making appearances on soundtracks through the company. Gomez signed with Hollywood Records in 2008, and later formed her band Selena Gomez & the Scene that same year. The group released their debut studio album the following year, propelling Gomez to further mainstream success.

While continuing to work with her band, Gomez began appearing in feature films outside of Disney. She had leading roles in films such as Ramona and Beezus (2010) and Monte Carlo (2011). Her band's second and third studio albums were commercial success, spawning multiple hit singles. Further attention was brought to Gomez when it was confirmed that she was in a relationship with Canadian pop-singer Justin Bieber. The couple became the center of a media frenzy, and their on-again-off-again romance received much media attention.

Following the conclusion of WIZARDS OF WAVERLY PLACE in 2012, Gomez took a hiatus from her music career and began appearing in more mature roles. She had a main role in the controversial film Spring Breakers (2013), and appeared in films such as Hotel Transylvania (2012) and Getaway (2013). Gomez then released her solo debut album, Stars Dance(2013), to commercial success. Work on her second studio album began that same year, while Gomez made various film appearances. She later signed with Interscope, and is subsequently set to release her first compilation album in November of 2014.
