As a recent graduate of the Juilliard Jazz program, Batiste has been spanning the globe, spinning his piano-led trio into flights of fancy that entrance listeners. You'll be entranced too, in the acoustic wonder of a theater found at the Rubin Museum of Art, for tonight's Harlem in the Himalayas program.
In 2005 he made his debut at Carnegie Hall at 18 years old. Since his arrival to New York Batiste has performed regularly around the city with his trio. His trio is the basis for most of his musical endeavors, whether they are performing, speaking to audiences about the music, educating younger musicians or exposing people to this essential part of American culture. In fact, one of his recent releases, Live In New York: At The Rubin Museum Of Art, features the talents of his trio as well as his skills as a pianist and composer in a live acoustic setting. The CD speaks volumes, steadily attracting the attention of many acclaimed artist and music lovers across the globe. Schoenberg has been awarded a Grammy for two sets of liner notes (a 1995 Smithsonian Recordings box set of Louis Armstrong music, and a 2004 Mosaic Records box set of the Woody Herman Orchestra, 1945-47), and is the author of The NPR's Curious Listener's Guide to Jazz. Yet tonight, unlike other evenings of Jazz for Curious Listeners and Harlem Speaks, where Loren plays the role of the interviewer, he'll be in the other chair, being interviewed about his excellent writings on the art of jazz.

The first of four jazz classic albums we're considering this month is thought by some to be the most classic jazz recording of all, Kind of Blue by Miles Davis (with Jimmy Cobb, Paul Chambers, Bill Evans, Wynton Kelly, Cannonball Adderley and John Coltrane). This innovative session defined the essence of jazz to several generations of jazz lovers, its cool fire igniting improvisational flames of deep feeling, the master musicians riffing on mere sketches of music given by Miles.
