Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts ("The Wallis") presents SFJAZZ Collective: The Music of Joe Henderson & Original Compositions for one performance only, April 19, 2015 at 7:00 pm, in the Bram Goldsmith Theater. During the concert, SFJAZZ Collective's debut at The Wallis, the group will pay tribute to legendary saxophonist and composer Joe Henderson with new arrangements of his classic pieces from his early Blue Note years through his resurgence on Verve Records in the 1990s, in addition to performing new, original pieces. On March 10, the group released SFJAZZ Collective: Music of Joe Henderson and New Compositions, Live at SFJAZZ Center, recorded last October at the group's home base - the SFJAZZ Center in San Francisco. A selection of this recording was broadcast recently on NPR's Jazz Night in America.

SFJAZZ Collective is an award-winning all-star jazz ensemble comprising eight of the finest jazz performer/composers at work today. Launched in 2004, the Collective has quickly become one of the most exciting and acclaimed groups on the American and international jazz scenes. Hailing from Puerto Rico, New York, Venezuela, Philadelphia, New Zealand and Israel, the Collective's multi-cultural lineup mirrors the explosion of jazz talent around the world. The musicians are: Miguel Zenón on alto saxophone, David Sánchez on tenor saxophone, Avishai Cohen on trumpet, Robin Eubanks on trombone, Warren Wolf on vibraphone, Edward Simon on piano, Matt Penman on bass and Obed Calvaire on drums.

Each year, the SFJAZZ Collective creates and performs eight new works and eight new arrangements honoring the work of a selected artist. Past honorees include Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Thelonious Monk, Wayne Shorter, McCoy Tyner, Horace Silver, Stevie Wonder and Chick Corea. SFJAZZ Collective celebrated its 10th Anniversary last year with an appearance at the 60th Anniversary Newport Jazz Festival, where it performed many of its finest arrangements and original compositions.

In addition to its outstanding line-up, SFJAZZ Collective has been praised for its innovative approach to repertoire. This pioneering approach, which honors jazz's recent history while championing the music's up-to-the-minute evolutions, the Collective embodies SFJAZZ's commitment to jazz as a living, ever-relevant art form. ??
