School of Night Debut Self-Titled EP
School of Night, Minus Green Records
Celebrating today's release of School of Night's self-titled debut EP on Minus Green Records in the U.S. and Transgressive Records in the rest of the world, Esquire is premiering the video for the album track "Fire Escape," which can be viewed at http://bit.ly/1aJdWBS. The EP is available for purchase via iTunes at http://bit.ly/1d32FkE. School of Night is the solo project of Darby Cicci, multi-instrumentalist and producer of The Antlers.
Of the video, which was directed by Cicci himself, he notes, "I was pretty obsessed with a lot of the cheap '70s and '80s horror while I was recording this song. I love the textures and simple dramatic shots in those films-they have a ton of vibe and mystery around them, and they always leave a lot to the imagination. I wanted this video to have that kind of vibe-scratchy and dark. The video stars my amazing actor friends Colin Donnell and Taylor Lashae. They're pros and have been doing TV work lately, so I was pretty excited when they agreed to be in something I was directing myself and filming mostly in a basement. Didn't sound sketchy at all."
On the heels of a successful record release show at New York's Mercury Lounge, Cicci will be performing at the CMJ Music Marathon before starting a run of shows in the U.K.; please see below for a list of dates.
The School of Night EP was written, recorded and produced between 2011-2012 mostly during Cicci's brief breaks from recording and touring with The Antlers. "I would go to my studio, play synths in the dark, collect sounds that I love and try to build little worlds I could just dissolve into and explore," Cicci notes of the writing and recording process. "At first it was mostly playtime and I wasn't planning on releasing it, but if I've learned anything from my experiences, it's that the more you open up and share about yourself, the more you'll learn."
Cicci is best known as multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer for The Antlers since the group's formation in 2007. Cicci produced The Antlers' last two critically acclaimed albums, Burst Apart (2011) and Undersea (2012), as well as records for Porcelain Raft and Yellow Ostrich. He has also made countless remixes for artists including Neon Indian, PVT and Freelance Whales.
