Opera, Time For Three, Voxare String Quartet & More Join Crested Butte in Colorado

The Crested Butte Opera Studio and Festival Symphony Orchestra perform an enchanting double bill of two short comedic masterpieces that will leave you in high spirits! Offenbach's The Island of Tulipatan and Puccini's Gianni Schicchi take over the stage of the Mirror palace for three nights only. Tulipatan is a tale of duplicitous identities, and Gianni Schicchi tells the story of a man who successfully impersonates another with surprising results. Complete your perfect summer day with a beautiful night of opera this summer. Gianni Schicchi features one of opera's most beloved arias, "O mio babbino caro."
A four-course pre-performance dinner is also available in the Mt. Crested Butte Mirror Palace for an additional $40. The Island of Tulipatan is sung in French and Gianni Schicchi is sung in Italian.

One of the most creative musicians active today, Randy is a pianist/"synthist," singer, composer, recording artist, actor, and poet. With boundless creative energy, he's created over 30 albums, 2 cover records, and 3 experimental movies. Randy has toured with The Lawrence Welk Orchestra, Sturgeon, Sea Palace/GhostRow productions, Black Symphony, Target Sunshine, Hermosa Bleach, Randy/Dusty Show, 9 million B.C., and more. In this AfterDark performance, Randy will sing and play on keyboard a set of his wide ranging creations, from hypno-soul to sweaty folk, experimental rock on into vampire reggae.

Time for Three - violinist Nicolas (Nick) Kendall, double bassist Ranaan Meyer and now with CBMF favorite, violinist Charles Yang - will blow you away with their energy, virtuosity, and dynamic repertoire from Bach to the Beatles to Katy Perry.
The groundbreaking, category-shattering trio Time for Three transcends traditional classification, with elements of classical, country western, gypsy and jazz idioms forming a blend all its own. The members carry a passion for improvisation, composing and arranging, all prime elements of the ensemble's playing.
To date, the group has performed hundreds of engagements as diverse as its music: from featured guest soloists on the Philadelphia Orchestra's subscription series to Club Yoshi's in San Francisco to residencies at the Kennedy Center to Christoph Eschenbach's birthday concert at the Schleswig-Holstein Festival in Germany. Recent highlights included their Carnegie Hall debut, appearances with the Boston Pops, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, a sell-out concert at the 2014 BBC Proms, and an appearance on the ABC prime time hit show "Dancing with the Stars."
This performance is funded by the Film Funds Trust Funds in association with the Music Performance Trust Fund, the world's largest sponsors of live admission-free, professional musical programs. These funds are non-profit, tax-exempt public service organizations dedicated to contributing to the public's knowledge and appreciation of music and to making live music a part of every child's life experience.

Bring your kids (or not) and get up close and personal with various instruments of the orchestra. Members of the CBMF Symphony will be your guide as you learn about the instruments - what they're made of, how they work, and how they're made. The powerful Voxare String Quartet, featuring CBMF co-Artistic Directors Emily Ondracek-Peterson and Erik Christian Peterson, plays its own soundtrack of masterpiece Soviet repertoire to accompany the 1929 silent masterpiece, The Man with a Movie Camera. Initially regarded by contemporaries as "pointless camera hooliganism," The Man with a Movie Camera is now regarded as one of the greatest films ever made.
"The gifted Voxare String Quartet" (The New York Times) formed in 2008 and has since received critical praise for its inventive programming, technical prowess, attention to detail, and passionate performances. As one of the most acclaimed and innovative young string quartets in the United States, The New York Times declared that Voxare plays "with such penetrating tone and lucid textures," and has on numerous occasions chosen Voxare as its Classical Pick of the Week. Voxare's performances have included appearances at Avery Fisher Hall with the New York Philharmonic, the Guggenheim Museum, Carnegie Hall, and Lincoln Center.
In addition to performing standard repertoire, Voxare takes responsibility in presenting and encouraging interest in contemporary music, and often works with leading composers such as Pulitzer Prize winning composers Ned Rorem and David Del Tredici. Voxare was the Quartet-in-Residence at the International Computer Music Conference and continues working with composers and researchers in studying electro-acoustic music.
With a repertoire spanning five centuries, Voxare is not afraid to break down the boundaries of classical music; they have made and performed their own transcriptions of popular and rock music and often perform in alternative concert venues, presenting innovative concerts focused on unique and accessible presentations of contemporary chamber music while assimilating classical standards and popular music. Voxare can be found on the soundtracks of several films shown at festivals such as Sundance and Tribeca.

Youths under 18 can also enjoy free entry to select Festival performances with the purchase of one regularly priced adult ticket. Enjoy classical music, opera, dance, jazz, and bluegrass with some of today's most exciting performing artists. Kids Go Free is part of the Festival's commitment to developing the performers of tomorrow and inspiring future generations to appreciate the arts.

More about the Crested Butte Opera Studio:
The Crested Butte Opera Studio provides young professional singers the opportunity to study and perform with leading opera experts during a six-week residency at the Crested Butte Music Festival. Under the direction of the Opera Studio's Artistic Director, Lynn Baker, participants will undergo a rigorous training program that includes forty hours per week of vocal and dramatic instruction. Students will perform all lead roles in the Festival's double bill of Offenbach's The Island of Tulipatan and Puccini's Gianni Schicchi, present an evening of cabaret, perform in a vocal chamber and art song recital, and sing in public master classes by visiting faculty, including tenor Barry Banks and dramaturg Cori Ellison.
More about the Mt. Crested Butte Mirror Palace:
One of only four such structures in the U.S., the Mt. Crested Butte Mirror Palace is a semi-permanent Spiegeltent that will house all of the CBMF mainstage concerts. Flemish for "mirror tents," Spiegeltents were built around 1900 in Belgium for use as traveling dance halls and town fairs. The Mt. Crested Butte Mirror Palace is nicknamed "Victoria" and was originally built in the 1930s by the Klessens family. The numerous spiegels, or mirrors, in the tent allowed for discreet eye contact between visitors and became a legendary symbol of the wild fin-de-siècle nightlife. This tent has traveled around the world and most recently spent ten years in South Africa. In addition to housing the Festival events, the Tent is available for special events and rentals.
About the Crested Butte Music Festival:
The 2017 season offers an array of performances over seven weeks from June to August in classical music, Gypsy jazz, dance, opera, and more. Through CBMF's guest artists, residents and visitors of Gunnison County have access to performances and educational opportunities that would typically only be available in a major metropolitan area.
