Since this is One Direction's first song released without former member Zayn Malik, there has been much speculation as to whether this release is in response to the announcement that Malik signed to a new record label, RCA Records, earlier this week.

One Direction, who just celebrated their 5th anniversary as a band, is set to release their newest album in November, 'Drag Me Down' being the first track released.

The song was written by Jamie Scott, John Ryan and Julian Bunetta, and produced by Ryan and Bunetta. Payne and his bandmates Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan are in the midst of their fourth North American tour, with the On The Road Again trek.
