Los Tigres del Norte, the most influential regional Mexican group, will receive the first ever Leader Billboard award. The recognition for their leadership role and social activism will take place at the 2013 Billboard Mexican Music Awards set to broadcast live on Wednesday, October 9 at 7pm/6c from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California.

Iconic Norteño band Los Tigres del Norte boasts a musical career that spans more than three decades of performances, and in excess of 32 million albums sold. The quintet made up of siblings Jorge, Luis, Hernan and Eduardo Hernandez, along with cousin Oscar Lara, have not only distinguished themselves for their music, but also for their commitment to tackle the issues that impact their fans through their legendary corridos, from immigration reform, to drug trafficking, to politics. They have defended causes and people through both their music and actions, becoming a public voice for immigration reform, including a march and concert planned in Washington, D.C. The group has also contributed in a major way to education with the creation of the Los Tigres del Norte Foundation for the preservation and support of traditional Mexican and Mexican-American music forms.

Billboard magazine declared the family of musicians as the world's most influential regional Mexican group, widely viewed as The Voice of the people. The New York Times went further to explain the secret of their success as the ground-level symbiosis with their fans, and the Los Angeles Times stated "The songs of Los Tigres Del Norte remain one of the clearest windows into the immigrant soul." In recognition of their leadership role and social activism, Los Tigres del Norte will be honored with Billboard's inaugural Lider (Leader) Award, to be presented at the 2013 Billboard Mexican Music Awards.
