JEFFREY JOHNSON as EDIE BEALE
Little Edie Beale's Infamous 1978 Cabaret Act "Live At Reno Sweeey" Re-Staged With Jeffrey Johnson
After two successful runs earlier this year at Joe's Pub in New York City and a feature in May's issue of Playbill Magazine, "Little Edie" Beale takes her show west for this first time to San Francisco. Many have seen the HBO special "Grey Gardens," and have knowledge about Edith Beale; however, "Edie Beale Live at Reno Sweeney," recreates the now infamous nightclub performance of Ms. Beale, of Grey Garden's fame, in New York City in 1978. Written by Duval, who managed and produced a cabaret act by Edith Beale, the show recreates the essence of those magical nights at the New York City nightclub using dialogue, songs, and text from the historic event and conversations that took place following the 1978 appearance. This special engagement run stars Ganymede Arts' artistic director, Jeffrey Johnson as Beale. Also in the cast are Michael Winstead and Keith Tittermary. The upcoming San Francisco shows are Edie's first West Coast performance before she heads south to Los Angeles to perform at Show at Barre. Sandra Bernhard has said that "Jeffrey Johnson's "Little Edie Beale" is Flawless!" While the Washington City Paper stated, "Johnson's Little Edie is both grand and gratifying!" And the director of the original Grey Gardens documentary, AlBert Maysles praised Jeffrey's performance as "Excellent. Pure perfection. Truly astonishing!" Jeffrey Johnson as Edie Beale runs for 2 performances only Friday and Saturday, November 5-6 at 10:30 PM. The RRazz room at Hotel Nikko is located at 222 Mason Street (at Ellis), San Francisco, CA 94102. Tickets are $25 with a two-drink minimum. LINDA KOSUT
in "By Any Other Name" Pairing Songs With The Same Titles Across Genres And Decades
San Francisco favorite and Bistro/BMI Award-winning jazz & cabaret vocalist Linda Kosut presents her brand new show "By Any Other Name." Lead by musical director John Simon, Linda's band has some of the Bay Area's top musicians including Tom Shader on bass, John Mader on drums and Tony Malfatti, on horns. What is "By Any other Name"? Given that songwriters can name their songs the same as other tunes already published, there are many songs with the same names - take "Time After Time" written in 1947 by Sammy Cahn & Julie Styne or was it written by Cyndi Lauper in 1984? How about "All By Myself" written by Irving Belrin in 1921, or maybe that was written by Eric Carmen in 1975? In her new show, Kosut and her band, in her style of mixing up unexpected arrangements of jazz, pop and folk, will present songs with the same title from different genres and across the decades. Linda Kosut runs for 1 performance only Monday, December 6 at 8:00 PM. The RRazz room at Hotel Nikko is located at 222 Mason Street (at Ellis), San Francisco, CA 94102.
