~David McCormick, owner, Ernest Tubb Record Shop, Nashville

"Junior told me once that he was very impressed by Jimi Hendrix, by the way he was very wild, and yet he was very controlled. He knew where everything was going in a solo, and he (Junior), I think tries for the same effect, and I think he hits it virtually every time."
~Mitch Mitchell, drummer, The Jimi Hendrix Experience

ANE BRUN w/ special guest Linnea Olsson
(Songs & Rarities: Solo Acoustic Tour. Norwegian singer-songwriter) Wed, Feb 19, 8pm
$24 adv, $29 door
Ane Brun's 'Don't Leave' steals the spotlight in a somber Chevy Super Bowl ad.
The recording of Ane Brun's new album, It All Starts With One would have been underway as early as 2010, were it not for Peter Gabriel and Ani DiFranco inviting Ane on tour. Much to the frustration of her fast-growing fan base, accumulated over the previous three studio album and periods of hard touring, Ane Brun's own album had to wait. This, however, turned out to be an advantageous move with that year spent on the world tour giving Ane time to write additional songs and allowing for further work on those that already existed. During those magical recording days in Stockholm last spring, no one in the artist's inner circle had any doubt that the time was right, everything just fell into place. Read more here.

Just four years ago, McLaughlin's Island Records debut propelled his song "Beautiful Disaster" up the charts, with "Beating My Heart" following quickly after. Hollywood immediately took notice of the young songwriter and didn't stop at just using several of his songs for films and commercials. McLaughlin himself was offered a role in the hit film Enchanted, performing a song that was later nominated for an Academy Award. In 2008, he found himself onstage at the Oscars reprising the tune in front of 32 million US viewers. In between the hit songs and television appearances, true to his hardworking Midwestern roots, McLaughlin spent his nights opening for the likes of Sara Bareilles and Kelly Clarkson, recording with Jason Mraz and writing for other artists.

ICONS OF FUNK feat. Leo Nocentelli, Bernie Worrell, Bill "The Buddha" Dickens & Adrian Harpham
(THE METERS - P FUNK Experience)
Leo Nocentelli (The Meters)
Bernie Worrell (PFunk)
Bill "The Buddha" Dickens (Ramsey Lewis)
Adrian Harpham (Groove Theory, Lucy Pearl & Dr. John)
Sat, Feb 22, 8 & 10pm
8pm: $24 standing, $34 seated
10pm: $22 standing, $32 seated
Leo Nocentelli was one of the original members of the Meters, a groundbreaking funk group based in New Orleans from the mid-'60s to the mid-'70s. The band, playing mostly instrumentals, stayed at the forefront of the music scene in the Big Easy and achieved a good measure of national attention with Nocentelli penning songs and contributing guitar work. He has since gone out on his own developing his style with varied elements that span blues, rock, rap, jazz, and funk, but he considers himself a funk musician, first and foremost. He and his band have performed from coast to coast across the U.S., including an appearance at New Orleans' Jazz & Heritage Festival. He has penned more than 200 songs, some of which were recorded by Robert Palmer, Etta James, the Neville Brothers, ZZ Hill and George Duke.

Bernie Worrell first came to prominence as a founding member and Musical Director of Parliament/Funkadelic. While this massively influential supergroup was radically altering the course of music, Bernie was radically charting the course of emerging keyboard technology during the golden age of analog synthesis. Among the key ingredients in his sonic stew were perfect pitch and a well-honed facility with the classical canon. Upon leaving the Conservatory, Worrell served for several years as Musical Director for Maxine Brown before joining George Clinton's Parliament/Funkadelic. From fanciful forays on clavinet which leaped without warning from guttural gulps to squiggly squeals to liquid Minimoog bass lines which herded listeners to the dance floor, it all represented new musical language. All the while, his rapid advancements of the synthesizer's potential were actually traceable to his classical foundation. Read more here.

WILL DOWNING(Prince of Sophisticated Soul) Sat-Sun, Mar 1-2
Sat: 8pm $60, $80 VIP (SOLD OUT!!!)
Sun: 7pm $55 GA, $75 VIP
Women love Will Downing. And men love the women who love Will Downing. In his two decade recording career, the Brooklyn native has carved for himself a solid career as one of the leading purveyors of unapologetic, unabashed romantic music. And while this has not translated to crossover success - or even to broad urban radio success - it has gained for Downing a solid musical legacy and a rabidly loyal following of, well...women. Downing had his first national exposure as a popular backing vocalist in the '80s before signing with Island Records. He recorded two modestly successful albums and had a minor hit with a cover of "A Love Supreme" before releasing his breakout 1991 album A Dream Fulfilled. It was a marvelous disc that showed Downing not only possessed a fine baritone voice but that he was also was an excellent song stylist, deftly handling such diverse songs as War's "The World Is A Ghetto" and Paul Davis's "I Go Crazy" and providing a stunning, definitive version of Angela Bofill's "I Try." Both the "I Try" single and the album hit the Urban top 25, and critical acclaim for the disc abounded. Read more here.

Among the members who became minor rap luminaries were DJs Red Alert, Jazzy Jay, and Whiz Kid, as well as Afrika Islam, who went on to work with Ice-T. Read more here.

COMMANDER CODY(Legendary country-rock group)Wed, Mar 5, 8pm
$21 adv, $25 door
Look in any book on the History of Rock and Roll and you will find Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen. The band's name was inspired by 1950's film serials featuring the character Kommando Kody and from a feature version of an earlier serial, King of the Rocket Men, released under the title Lost Planet Airmen. The band's founder and leader, George Frayne, took the stage name Commander Cody. Among many other achievements, this eight-piece super band's album Deep in the Heart of Texas is one of Rolling Stone Magazine's Top 100 albums of all time. It's no wonder Billy C Farlow, the lead singer, also played trumpet and blues harp. The fiddler, Andy Stein, played saxophone and the guitar player, Bill Kirchen, played trombone. Cody the piano pounder, doubled on Kazoo. And they all sang. They toured nonstop to a legion of dedicated fans across the globe and back and recorded seven original albums before the band finally broke up and each member went their separate ways in 1977. DE LA SOUL <~ NEW SHOW ON SALE NOW (Legendary hip-hop trio)
Fri, Mar 7, 8pm & 10pm
$46
At the time of its 1989 release, De La Soul's debut album, 3 Feet High and Rising, was hailed as the future of hip-hop. With its colorful, neo-psychedelic collage of samples and styles, plus the Long Island trio's low-key, clever rhymes and goofy humor, the album sounded like nothing else in hip hop. Where most of their contemporaries drew directly from old-school rap, funk, or Public Enemy's dense sonic barrage, De La Soul were gentler and more eclectic, taking in not only funk and soul, but also pop, jazz, reggae, and psychedelia. Though their style initially earned both critical raves and strong sales, De La Soul found it hard to sustain their commercial momentum in the '90s as their alternative rap was sidetracked by the popularity of considerably harder-edged gangsta rap. De La Soul formed while the trio - Posdnuos (born Kelvin Mercer, August 17, 1969), Trugoy the Dove (born David Jude Jolicoeur, September 21, 1968), and Pasemaster Mase (born Vincent Mason, March 27, 1970) - were attending high school in the late '80s. The stage names of all of the members derived from in-jokes: Posdnuos was an inversion of Mercer's DJ name, Sound-Sop; Trugoy was an inversion of Jolicoeur's favorite food, yogurt. De La Soul's demo tape, "Plug Tunin'," came to the attention of Prince Paul, the leader and producer of the New York rap outfit Stetsasonic. Prince Paul played the tape to several colleagues and helped the trio land a contract with Tommy Boy Records. Read more here.

Double Bill: KRIS BOWERS QUINTET & THE MYELE MANZANZA TRIO w/ Mark de Clive-Lowe & Ben Shepherd <~ JUST ADDED SUPPORT (Eclectic pianist Kris Bowers touring debut album Heroes + Misfits (Concord Jazz, March 2014)
plus acclaimed New Zealand drummer Myele Manzanza's trio)
Sun, Mar 9, 7pm
$17 adv, $19 door
Pianist Kris Bowers is one of the newest and brightest lights on the jazz landscape. Schooled in jazz and classical music, raised amid the rap and hip-hop of the 1990s, inspired by the cinematic power of the great film composers of recent decades, Bowers' sound - though rooted in traditional styles - is open to numerous external influences that keep the music fresh and vibrant for a new century. This rich and eclectic sensibility is evident from the very first notes of Heroes + Misfits, his debut recording on Concord Jazz. Although considered primarily a jazz artist, Bowers has never been afraid to step outside of the genre's traditional boundaries and dabble in other forms of music. He performed on Watch the Throne, the 2011 collaborative album by hip-hop artists Jay-Z and Kanye West. In addition, he recently composed the score for Seeds of Time, a 2013 documentary by Sandy McCloud about the preservation of naturally occurring seed in an era of genetic engineering in agriculture. Heroes + Misfits, scheduled for release on Concord Jazz in March 2014, is an ambitious debut album that position Bowers at the forefront of a talented sextet and showcases a musical and compositional style that - while clearly rooted in the jazz tradition - is also reflective of an eclectic musical age.
