A native of Ohio, Legend has sold seven million albums worldwide. In addition to his Grammy Awards, Legend has three Soul Train Awards, the BET Award for Best New Artist and the special Starlight Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
The University of Pennsylvania graduate was introduced to Lauryn Hill while still in college, who hired him to play piano on her track "Everything Is Everything." After college, Legend was introduced to then up-and-coming hip-hop artist Kanye West, who quickly signed Legend to his G.O.O.D. Music label and hired him to sing vocal hooks on some of his music.
Legend started gaining momentum through a series of similar collaborations with established artists, among them will.i.am, Alicia Keys and Jay-Z, and in December 2004 Legend released his debut album, "Get Lifted." That spawned his first hit single, "Ordinary People." His other hit singles include "Heaven" and "Green Light."
