A WINGED VICTORY FOR THE SULLEN

A Winged Victory for the Sullen is a collaboration between Stars of the Lid's Adam Wiltzie and L.A. composer Dustin O'Halloran. Using an array of rare nine foot grand pianos that could deliver extreme sonic low end, the duo developed the recordings in large acoustic spaces around the world. They also used traditional instrumentation including string quartet, French horn and bassoon, but always juxtaposed is the sound of drifting guitar-washed melodies. The artists pushed themselves to dangerous territory, resulting is seven works - landscapes of harmonic ingemination. Notable guest musicians include Icelandic cellist Hildur Gudnadottir, as well as Erased Tapes label comrade Peter Broderick on violin.

The Ballad of Pip is the middle section of a forthcoming, large-form communal theater event based on Herman Melville's Moby Dick. Scored for piano and voice, this through-composed, ambient song cycle tells the story of Pip, a young boy aboard the Pequod, who goes insane after a harrowing encounter with the indifferent infinity of the ocean. Pulling musical influence from early American folk ballads, Indian raga, and the solo piano concerts of Keith Jarrett, The Ballad of Pip is a hypnotic meditation on madness, smallness and awe.
Dave Malloy is a Brooklyn-based composer, performer and sound designer. He is the winner of two OBIE Awards, a Richard Rodgers Award and a Jonathan Larson Grant. His shows include Black Wizard / Blue Wizard; Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812; All Hands; Three Pianos; Beardo; Beowulf - A Thousand Years of Baggage; The Sewers; Sandwich; Clown Bible; and (The 99-cent) Miss Saigon.

Originally from North Carolina, singer/songwriter Benji Hughes is known for his critically-acclaimed and widely loved 25-track album A Love Extreme (2009). Of the album, Chuck Klosterman, then of Esquire, said, "The moment I saw the cover, I knew: I was going to love this music. I instinctively understood what it was supposed to do and how it was supposed to make me feel. And I was right." Since then, Hughes has spent considerable time working on film and television like How I Met Your Mother, Eastbound & Down, Chuck and Beverly Hills 90210. He has also worked with fellow artists like Jenny Lewis, Priscilla Ahn, Rilo Kiley and Kimbra on their albums. Hughes is currently working on several of his own albums, to be released in 2014. He will debut some of his new material during his shows at Joe's Pub.

Fuel Fandango is a duo formed by Flamenco singer Nita and DJ/producer Ale Acosta (formerly of Mojo Project). Their latest album Trece Lunas, mastered by Simon Daveys (Depeche Mode, Bjork, Chemical Brothers), is 13 songs combining funk, rock, electronic music and touches of Flamenco. Nita's vocals go from English to Spanish seamlessly, the same way she shifts from a soul-inflected sound to flamenco, because as they say, "flamenco does not know about languages." Trece Lunas was recorded in just 15 days to maintain the freshness and personality of each of the songs. On stage, Nita and Acosta, with Carlos Sosa on drums, bring those elements to life in an infectious way.

In these sharp, scary, funny, inviting, original prose poems, presented with live music by Dana Lyn's Slim Bone Head Volt, we meet both Manchester and Pilot Wolf. We can no longer look at nature, the body (human or animal, it matters not), or ballet the same way. D'Onofrio says, "My private journals read by me in a private way in order to change the world and stuff. When I read them to myself, my mind--the mind in my head--fills with music, yet I can't find the source of the music because I refuse to look around me. It is below me to look around. Around, below. Yet the music plays for you on stage, for you. I refuse it while you listen. I refuse to look around. You."

PT Walkley's record release party at Joe's Pub will feature the entire ensemble from the his latest album Shoulders and promises to pack a wallop. PopMatters said, "Walkley's songs emerge as fully-formed catchy pop nuggets with hooks galore. Power pop-rock and classic R&B combine in the songs from Shoulders, releasing February 18th. Shoulders plays very much as a song cycle, one based around an emotional year in which Walkley's son was born and his best friend passed away. This is classic stuff, easy to love from the first few notes...honestly, you had me the second those Stax-esque horns first appeared."
Proceeds from this evening will benefit New York's oldest preschool, Little Missionary's Day Nursery, and the school's plans for expansion.

Ubu Sings Ubu is a tribute band playing the obscenely classic songs of cult band Pere Ubu, as sung by the classically obscene character of Pere Ubu from Ubu Roi. The band includes Tony Torn (Ubu/Vocals), Julie Atlas Muz (Ma Ubu), Vera Beren (Queen of Poland/Keys/Theremin), Emmitt Joe George (Captain Edge, Bass, Backing Vocals), Matt Butterfield (Bougrelas, Guitar, backing vocals), Patrick "Paddymyke" Conlon (King Of Poland, Drums) and Dan Safer (Co-Director/Bear). Stew is slated to sit in as special guest.

Described by The Boston Globe as one who "plays classical violin with the charisma of a rock star," Juilliard graduate Charles Yang began his violin studies with his mother in Austin, TX, and has since studied with world-renowned pedagogues Kurt Sassmanshaus, Paul Kantor, Brian Lewis and Glenn Dicterow. He has performed as a soloist with orchestras and in recitals in the United States, Europe, Brazil, Russia, China and Taiwan, and is the recipient of numerous awards and honors.
Not only confined to classical violin, Yang's improvisational abilities as a violinist, electric violinist and vocalist have allowed him to crossover and perform with artists like CDZA, Steve Miller, Jake Shimabukuro, the Orchestra of St. Lukes, Ray Benson, Marcelo Gomes, Misty Copeland and Jonathan Batiste. He has performed everywhere from the Metropolitan Opera House to The Forbidden City in Beijing. Most recently, Yang completed a week at Lincoln Center as the solo violinist with American Ballet Theatre's revival of Twyla Tharp's Bach Partita.
