Jazz piano legend Joe Sample makes his Wolf Trap debut in a jazz-fusion solo show influenced by gospel, soul, blues, and classical music. Born and raised in Texas, Sample gained recognition in the '70s as one of the founding members of The Crusaders-formerly known as the Jazz Crusaders. He toured and recorded with the chart-topping jazz-funk group for over two decades, achieving major commercial success with the album Street Life (1979). In addition to his ensemble work, Sample is known for his successful career as a soloist and sought-after studio musician. His best-selling albums include Rainbow Seeker (1978) and Carmel (1979). Sample has also collaborated with music icons such as Marvin Gaye, Eric Clapton, and Tina Turner. As an in-demand composer, his works have been featured in several popular films including Thelma and Louise (1991) and Moulin Rouge (2001).

John McCutcheon

Singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist John McCutcheon brings his topical ballads and Appalachian sound to The Barns at Wolf Trap. Declared "the most impressive instrumentalist I've ever heard" by Johnny Cash, McCutcheon has released more than 30 albums for adults and children throughout the course of his career. The folk singing legend's varied compositions range in style-from country, folk to rock and documentaries-and have garnered him seven GRAMMY nominations. An accomplished musician adept in over a dozen instruments, McCutcheon experiments with arrangements by incorporating the banjo, fiddle, autoharp, and his signature hammer dulcimer. His talent as a storyteller has resulted in appearances at the National Storytelling Festival, the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, and A Prairie Home Companion.

Robbie Schaefer

American folk-rocker, singer and guitarist Robbie Schaefer returns to The Barns at Wolf Trap with his witty lyrics and contemporary folk music. As a member of the Virginia band Eddie From Ohio, Schaefer has released nine albums and toured extensively with the group. Since its inception in 1991, they have been named "Best Contemporary Folk Group" six times by the Washington Area Music Association. As a solo act, Schaefer has produced two albums for adults, In the Flesh (2003) and Strange and Lovely World (2008). His insightful songwriting explores topics like spirituality and transition. Schaefer is also known for his children's music, appearing regularly at Wolf Trap Children's Theatre-in-the-Woods. He released his first album for children and families, Songs for Kids Like Us, in 2006. In 2010 Schaefer founded OneVoice, a nonprofit that promotes peace and cultural awareness among children by facilitating international musical sister-school relationships.

Jake Armerding


Boston-based folk singer Jake Armerding delivers his folk melodies and acoustic strumming in a debut performance at The Barns at Wolf Trap. Regarded as "the most gifted and promising songwriter to emerge from the Boston folk scene in years" by the Boston Globe, Armerding has released a total of six full-length albums. Outside of the studio, he has appeared in over 1,500 live performances and collaborated with famed artists such as Béla Fleck, Nickel Creek, Josh Ritter, David Wilcox, and Toad the Wet Sprocket. Inspired by Community Supported Agriculture farms, he launched The Jake Armerding CSA (Community Supported Art) in 2011. Armerding's CSA sells shares of his musical projects and artwork, inviting the community to invest and share in the results.
