As the theatre curtains lower and the Festival Hub concerts at David Pecaut Square come to an end each night, the 7th Annual Luminato Festival is prepared to maintain momentum with a series of after-hours shows through Luminato Late Night Music featuring a Montréal DJ, a German Art collective, a troubadour, and a symphony.
Taking place after dark is an immersive sensory experience with scratch DJ Kid Koala, an evening of Russian mystery and romance with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Gob Squad's cinematic "war on anonymity" and The Courtyard Revue's nightly concert and dance party hosted by Jason Collett.
The Courtyard Revue, a Luminato Festival spin-off of Collett's The Basement Revue, will serve as the official Festival after-party and maintain The Basement Revue's traditional impromptu surprise performances with artists from the Festival and beyond. Today, Collett broke his own rule and announced that Montréal's AroarA, made up of Broken Social Scene's Andrew Whiteman and Ariel Engle, and Toronto's VAG HALEN, an all-lesbian cover band doing 80scrock, will play every night at The Courtyard Revue, alongside special guests including Rufus Wainwright, Kevin Drew (Broken Social Scene),Torquil Campbell (Stars), Matmos (Bjork collaborators), Svetlana Spajic, Oren Bloedow, Vincent Lam, Ken Babstock, Mary Margaret O'Hara, and many more. Keep an eye on www.luminatofestival.com for daily announcements and special surprises.
June 14 - 23, 2013
The Courtyard Revue at Luminato hosted by Jason Collett
One frosty winter night in 2007, The Basement Revue, brainchild of singer-songwriter and master showman Jason Collett, was born at Toronto's Dakota Tavern. A critical and popular sensation, The Basement Revue has featured the best of Canadian literary and musical talent in a cross-pollinating variety show. Luminato Festival debuted that same year, and has earned global renown for its mélange of local, national and International Artists. For the 7thannual Luminato Festival, these two creative forces will be fused. Each night, The Courtyard Revue will cap off with a dance party featuring a secret mutant wedding band. 11:30PM
Montreal's AroarA are a new band comprised of Broken Social Scene's Andrew Whiteman and Ariel Engle. Best described by Feist as "ghost science faux-folk" - vocal duets, twin guitar lines and thundercloud drum machines are their stock-in-trade. Their debut record In The Pines is a hypnotic masterpiece adapted from a 2007 book of poems by the American avant-garde writer Alice Notley.
Just back from the Venice Biennale's opening night party at the Canadian pavilion, VAG HALEN will provide ass-shaking party vibes every night. Shary Boyle calls them "empowering, subversive and skilful, like something you'd find in an underground club in New York or Berlin."
"THE COURTYARD REVUE will also serve as the official after-party for Luminato Festival artists," said Jorn Weisbrodt, Artistic Director of the Luminato Festival "so, there's no telling who might take a guest turn onstage!"
June 14 & 15
Late Night at the Hub: Space Cadet
Following his triumphant appearance with Deltron 3030 at last year's Luminato Festival, multi-disciplinary focused, world-renowned, Montréal-based scratch DJ Kid Koala-whose diverse musical history includes tours with Radiohead, the Beastie Boys and Money Mark-returns with Space Cadet, a late night "quiet time" immersive headphone experience based on his second graphic novel. Dubbed "a triumph of whimsy" by Spin magazine, the audience sits on inflatable space pods, listening through individual headphone systems as Kid Koala brings his Space Cadet score to life on a piano and several turntables, accompanied by delicate screen animations inspired by his book. Through a special collaboration with International Flavors and Fragrances Inc., the world's foremost experts in the art of perfumery, Kid Koala will for the first time ever add custom scents to the experience, making it a true feast for all the senses, and suitable for all ages. 10:30PM
June 15
TSO Goes Late Night: Arabian Nights
"Whoever decided that the after-hours time-slot was reserved strictly for rockers hasn't spoken with Peter Oundjian." - Torontoist.com
Stay up late with TSO Music Director Peter Oundjian and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra as they present
a rousing, all-Russian program featuring superstar pianist Yuja Wang and TSO concertmaster Jonathan Crow. Expect stunning performances of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 and Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade, afterwards, mix and mingle at a post-concert party in the lobby of RTH, featuring live music from Toronto electro-pop artist Digits. 10:00PM
June 20 & June 22
Super Night Shot
For only 60 minutes prior to show time, the British-German art collective Gob Squad-founded in 1994 by students from Nottingham Trent University and Germany's University of Giessen's Institute for Applied Theatre Studies-will take to Toronto's streets, armed only with video cameras to make a movie. With a declaration of "war on anonymity," the Squad sets out for impromptu encounters, both comic and surreal, with strangers. The city becomes their stage and movie set. Returning to the Hub at 11PM (where they will receive a boisterous hero's welcome) they bring the audience directly into the end of the show and present the footage of the video playback in a four channel, super widescreen film with a live audio mix. 11:00PM
