Drummer Sunny Jain is an Indian-American musical trailblazer. With 4 CD's released as a leader, he has been touted as a leading voice for the new music Indo-Jazz (a movement of first-generation South Asians equally steeped in the jazz tradition and the music of their cultural heritage) and his latest release, Taboo, furthers the sound. Sunny was profiled in Downbeat Magazine (November 2009) for his unique blending of Indian music with jazz/world and in 2008 was commissioned by the Aaron Copland Fund to record Taboo, after being commissioned in 2006 by Chamber Music America to compose the new works. The CD was released in June 2010 on the Brooklyn Jazz Underground Records Label. He closed out 2007 with a milestone performance with the famed Sufi-rock group Junoon at the Nobel Peace Prize concert in Oslo, Norway, playing for Al Gore. In 2006, Traps magazine highlighted Sunny as a top New York City world jazz drummers, following on the heels of a feature in Jazz Hot magazine (France), in which he was noted as a rising star for his fusion of jazz and Indian music. Sunny received the Arts International Award in both 2003 and 2005 and in 2002, he was designated a Jazz Ambassador by the U.S. Department of State and The Kennedy Center. Sunny has performed with Joey Baron, Kenny Barron, Marc Cary, Samir Chatterjee, Kyle Eastwood, Roy Hargrove, Norah Jones, Q-Tip, Dewey Redman, Martha Wainwright, Kenny Wollesen and host of others.

Memphis-bred Brooklynite bassist/composer Stephan Crump will perform with his unique all-string Rosetta Trio in support of their new Sunnyside Records release, Reclamation. Featuring nine intensely personal compositions including the polyglot "Pernambuco," a piece commissioned by 92nd St Y and New York Guitar Festival, Reclamation is a declaration of a unique new compositional voice.
The freshness of the compositions is matched by the intimate synergy of the ensemble, first convened on the 2006 release Rosetta that gave the trio its name. Reviewers were ecstatic about the "engaging and sublime meeting" of Crump on acoustic bass with guitarists Liberty Ellman and Jamie Fox. "Here is a string ensemble for the new century!" raved Donald Elfman in All About Jazz NY. Having toured the US and UK and performed together in a varied contexts for years, Rosetta Trio has developed into a formidable unit, sensitively and powerfully rendering Crump's often profound, sometimes playful and always honest music.
The diverse array of sounds and sources on display is a natural extension of Crump's varied work as a performer. Known for transforming his instrument into a speaking entity with a magnetic pull on audiences, Crump recently launched his solo performance career as an invited artist at the 2009 International Society of Bassists conference. 2010 will see the release of new recordings documenting his free-improvised duo collaborations with both alto saxophonist Steve Lehman and pianist James Carney. Crump has received special notice of late for his 10 years of collaboration with pianist/composer Vijay Iyer, whose 2009 trio release, Historicity, has been heralded a game-changing jazz recording. "Someone's got to be the Holy Spirit, representing your faith that this jazz will breathe.." noted Ben Ratliff in his New York Times review of a Vijay Iyer Trio performance in NYC, "It's the bassist, of course, cutting through with big, wise, rounded notes."
The elegance and purposeful groove of Crump's playing, making him much more than a "sideman", are also on display outside of the jazz world, most often with the Jim Campilongo Electric Trio and with Crump's wife, the radiant singer/songwriter Jen Chapin, with whom he has worked as a bassist, arranger, and producer. Over the years, Crump's performances on both acoustic and electric bass have been heard across North America and Europe with Joel Harrison, Mahavishnu Project, Bobby Previte, Patti Austin, Gordon Gano, Lucy Kaplansky, Big Ass Truck, and the late Johnny Clyde Copeland. His compositions can be heard in Miramax, HBO, Showtime, Bravo, Granada America and Simple Focus Films, as well as on his earlier albums as a leader: Poems and Other Things, Tuckahoe and Rosetta.
Ellman and Fox were both fixtures on the San Francisco Bay area scene and had toured internationally before arriving in New York in the 90s. Aside from his own critically-acclaimed recording career, Ellman has been featured as guitarist and producer in Henry Threadgill's innovative group, Zooid, and has performed with other jazz visionaries such as Steve Coleman and Greg Osby. An accomplished jazz composer in his own right, Fox brings his idiosyncratic folk, R&B and blues perspective that has contributed to the music of such legends as Joan Baez and Brother Jack McDuff.

Spoke's first album creates a truly post-modern yet beautifully melodic sound incorporating diverse influences from 1960's free-bop, contemporary classical, funk, and Chinese pop music. Spoke's music lives in the intermediate territory between individual and collective improvisation, while retaining a sense of structure and tradition.

Shortly after arriving in New York in 2005 Kirk met trombonist Brian Drye and drummer Jeff Davis and set about forming his long-standing Quartet. Now legendary bassist Mark Helias has joined the fold. The Quartet released it first album "Big Wig" in 2007 on Cleanfeed records and has received many glowing reviews from critics around the globe. Nate Chinen of the The New York Times called it "a smartly self-assured debut." Scott Yanow of the All Music Guide explained the Quartet's playing as "explorative and advanced yet concise." The Quartet has been Kirk's outlet for his numerous original compositions which fuse his many influences: his first public appearances playing Dixieland with his great uncle, his formative years in blues bands, and his great love for jazz both free and structured. This came across clearly to All About Jazz's Troy Collins who described the Quartet's music as "sinuous free bop with deep roots in Pre-War swing as well as Post-War innovations."

SANDRA BEASLEY is the author of I Was the Jukebox, winner of the 2009 Barnard Women Poets Prize, selected by Joy Harjo and published by W. W. Norton. Her first collection, Theories of Falling, won the 2007 New Issues Poetry Prize. Her nonfiction has been featured in the Washington Post Magazine and she is working on Don't Kill the Birthday Girl: Tales from an Allergic Life, forthcoming from Crown. She lives in Washington, D.C.
Founder and curator of Music/Words, INNA FALIKS has established herself as one of the most passionate and poetic young pianists on the classical music scene. With a unique blend of acoustic rock, jazz, pop, bluegrass, funk and the avant-garde, New Haven, CT duo PRESTER JOHN has a sound that is entirely their own. Formed in 2008 by underground guitar-hero Shawn Persinger, Prester John also showcases the musical talents of David Miller on mandolin and vocals.
Taylor Guitars' Wood and Steel once wrote, "Persinger has defined his career by playing hard-to-define music." One minute you're hearing a pop/rock song the next you're listening to music that could have been composed by Stravinsky or Frank Zappa. And certainly Prester John's authenticity is difficult to match; their bluegrass repertoire sounds straight out of Appalachia (no doubt due to Persinger's West Virginia roots) and their swing tunes recall the bygone days of The Hot Club of France.
The PRESTER JOHN sound has developed over several years of Shawn's solo touring and performing (playing on 5 continents, in 34 countries and countless cities). With the addition of the extremely versatile David Miller the possibilities are endless.

Their influences include the Keith Jarrett Trio, Terence Blanchard Quintet, Paul Motion Trio, and the various incarnations of Chick Corea's bands. Days after their gig at Cornelia, the group goes into the studio to record their second record for release summer 2011 on the Songlines label.

With a busy touring schedule and rave reviews from the press and his peers, Jonathan Kreisberg is steadily becoming one of the most exciting new faces on the international Jazz scene. He has studied a wide range of music and performed in many eclectic situations. His compositions have been performed by his group on five continents.
As a member of U.M.'s concert jazz band he played with Joe Henderson, Michael Brecker and Red Rodney. He performed 20th century works with the New World Symphony under Michael Tilson Thomas. He has performed/performs as a sideman in the groups of Dr. Lonnie Smith, Joe Locke, Lee Konitz, Don Friedman, and Ari Hoenig as well as leading his own groups including such notables as Larry Grenadier, Bill stewart and Scott Wendholt. He has released 5 critically acclaimed CD's on the Criss Cross and Mel Bay Labels. The band will be performing music from the upcoming release SHADOWLESS this evening.
