Brooklyn-based trio The Lone Bellow brings its unique blend of American folk, country, and Southern gospel musical traditions to Zankel Hall tonight, October 18 at 10:00 p.m., kicking off the ninth annual WFUV Live at Zankel series. The group, featuring Zach Williams (vocals), Brian Elmquist (guitar and vocals), and Kanene Pipkin (mandolin and vocals), performs songs from their self-titled debut album released by Descendant Records / Sony Music this past January.
The annual WFUV Live at Zankel concert series celebrates the art of singer / songwriters, highlighting the eclectic nature of their music with WFUV's Program Director Rita Houston curating the series with
Carnegie Hall and serving as host for the concerts. Additional upcoming performances include

The series, which began in October 2005 as City Folk Live at Zankel, is based on WFUV's pioneering music format which blends adult rock, singer-songwriters, and roots music. Artists who have performed as part of the series include

The Lone Bellow is proving show by show that the sounds and stories of Main Street resonate on Main Streets everywhere, winning fans across
America and around the world. The band, whose self-titled album was released in January 2013 in the US, has released the album internationally via a worldwide deal with Descendant Records / Sony Music.
The Lone Bellow was formed in 2010 when lead singer, principal songwriter, and native Georgian Zach Williams went to Dizzy's Diner in Park Slope one morning to meet up with his friend from college-guitarist, singer, and fellow Georgian Brian Elmquist. Singer and mandolin player Kanene Pipkin, who had just returned to New York City from time spent living abroad in Beijing, also joined them for a jam session. Williams explains, "Three songs in, I realized I should quit what I'm doing and just make music with these people."
Prior to the group's formation, Williams had been pursuing a solo music career. He was initially drawn to songwriting and performing after a tragic horseback riding accident left his wife paralyzed and doctors predicted that she would never walk again. During her recuperation and recovery, Williams put his thoughts into journals, which became the basis for his first songwriting ideas. The couple eventually decided to move to New York City to pursue creative paths. After a reflective trip two years ago, Williams re-emerged with a stack of deeply personal songs rooted in the country, folk, and gospel of his Southern youth, which was the material he brought to the diner in 2010. Along with the core group of Williams, Pipkin, and Elmquist, The Lone Bellow's recording and touring ensemble now includes musicians on bass, keyboards, lap steel and electric guitar, banjo, and mandolin. The band, having completed its summer tour schedule, is now booked on a national tour through late November.
