Variety reports that Amy Schumer will join forces with New York Sen. (and cousin) Charles Schumer to call for a new public initiative against gun violence following July's tragic movie theater shooting at a screening of her new comedy "Trainwreck."

The plan will ask for background checks as well as additional funding for mental health. The legislation will "reward states with funding for submitting all necessary records into background check systems."

Three people were shot and killed during a deadly shooting spree at a screening of Schumer's film in Lafayette, Louisiana. Seven people were hospitalized. The gunman later shot and killed himself

The comedian took to Twitter following the tragedy, sharing"My heart is broken and all my thoughts and prayers are with everyone in Louisiana"

According to police, the unidentified gunman is described as "an older, white male". The shooting took place during a 7 o'clock p.m. screening of the film at Lafayette's Grand 16 Theater. .
