Warner Bros. Consumer Products and Cryptozoic Entertainment today announced an all-new game for fans of Middle-earth: The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Board Game. Cryptozoic Entertainment and world-renowned game developer Reiner Knizia continue their partnership by creating an exciting game of adventure that follows Bilbo Baggins and the Company of Dwarves in the upcoming film The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, a production of New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures (MGM). Based on the highly anticipated film from Academy Award-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Board Game invites fans to travel from the Mirkwood Forest and Lake-town, to the gold-filled caverns of Lonely Mountain in search of treasure and the courage to defeat Smaug.

"The upcoming movie, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, really highlights the importance of cooperation and camaraderie between the characters," explains Cryptozoic's Board Game Brand Manager, Adam Sblendorio. "Reiner Knizia has brought that feeling to the tabletop allowing players to put themselves in the shoes of these heroes. Players must work together if they want to survive the Dragon assault. It's a great feeling to sit around a table with your closest friends and accomplish something together. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Board Game really captures the essence of the movie."

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Board Game will be available in hobby and retail stores beginning December 2013. Capturing the spirit of Bilbo's adventures, this cooperative game requires teamwork to successfully complete the journey. One to four players will employ limited resources as they trek through Middle-earth, attempting to defeat treacherous creatures and surmount obstacles leading up to a final battle. Joining forces with Dwarves, players will encounter challenges that will require a sharpened sword, quick feet or thoughtful diplomacy to overcome.
This is a standalone game, but is also compatible with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Board Game.
