Related: CBS THIS MORNING, CBS

Academy Award-winning actress Octavia Spencer discussed the similarities between the lead character in her new film "Fruitvale Station" and Trayvon Martin's death in an interview that was broadcast today, July 22, 2013, on CBS This Morning (7:00-9:00 AM) on the CBS Television Network. Check out the appearance below!

Spencer said "Fruitvale Station," which revolves around the shooting of Oscar Grant, an unarmed man by an Oakland, Calif., transit officer, had similarities to the Trayvon Martin shooting.

"Well, not to conflate the two, but they definitely have similarities, and sadly, if we had had an Oscar Grant movie prior to the Trayvon Martin incident, we wouldn't have had a Trayvon Martin incident, I don't think," Spencer told co-hosts Charlie Rose and Norah O'Donnell. "I think what's happening now is that we're having this great discourse about our interaction with each other as people."

Spencer also discussed the challenges of finding acting roles for African-American women in Hollywood. "Well, you look for small movies because that's generally where they are," she said. "They're not-they're not coming from the studio end. And you-you kind of push them through-you see the hope in them."
