VIDEO: Idina Menzel Confirms She'd Like to Be Part of WICKED Film
In an interview with Digital Spy, Tony Award winner Idina Menzel confirmed that she would love to be a part of a big screen adaptation of the long-running Broadway musical WICKED, currently in development at Universal Pictures.
"If I could be a part of it in some way that would be great," Menzel told the site. "But I already feel like I received, and continue to receive, the gifts from Wicked and how it affects audiences."
Last year, it was confirmed that Universal Pictures chairman Adam Fogelson placed a top priority on the project, even though it has not yet been officially greenlit by the studio.
WICKED, which just celebrated its 10 year anniversary, has been Broadway's #1 show for an unprecedented nine consecutive years. The show is currently represented in North America with two concurrent national tours as well as the open-ended Broadway production. In its 10-year history, it has cumulatively grossed over $3.1 billion worldwide, with nearly $2.3 billion coming from its North American companies alone.
Based on the novel by Gregory Maguire, Wicked has music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, and a book by Winnie Holzman. The production is directed by Joe Mantello with musical staging by Wayne Cilento. Wickedis produced by Marc Platt, Universal Pictures, The Araca Group, Jon B. Platt and David Stone.
Menzel recently lent her voice to Disney's new animated film FROZEN, alongside Josh Gad, Kristen Bell and Jonathan Groff.
She will soon star in IF/THEN, marking her return to Broadway for The First Time since winning the Tony Award for Wicked. The new original Broadway musical reunites Tom Kitt (music), Brian Yorkey (book and lyrics), and Michael Greif (director), the creative team behind the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning musical, Next to Normal.
The musical had its world premiere in a pre-Broadway out-of-town engagement at The National Theatre in Washington, D.C., beginning preview performances on Tuesday, November 5 and running through December 8.
