Baseball is a sport for true athletes, who must be ready at a moment's notice to spring into action on the field. This new illustrated book takes a look at one of the most famous fictional players of the game - the Mighty Casey - and explores why his fans were so devoted to the player and, thus, so devastated when he infamously struck out in Mudville.

Author Robert Elroy Lockley Jr. was inspired to write his poem based on the unforgettable poem "Casey at the Bat," written by Ernest Thayer in 1888, which he first heard in third grade. "Casey's Gang O' Nine (Mudville Revisited)" features larger-than-life characters that fill the pages with their colorful computer-generated images. Lockley includes details he's found after researching that infamous game, which drew a capacity crowd of 5,000. His rhyming book makes liberal use of "Erinish" words, which sound somewhat Irish. Their meaning is included in a glossary.

Robert Elroy Lockley Jr. spent time when he was young at a fishing camp his parents owned on Sarasota Bay, Fla. He opted to go into the workforce instead of school, starting on a drilling rig in 1977. He met his second wife, Yvonne, the love of his life, in Florida in 1990. He has four children and eight grandchildren, with family living in Central and South America, Europe and the United States.
