According to UK's The Guardian, director Rob Reiner has shared that he still intends to bring his 1987 film The Princess Bride to the Broadway stage, despite recent failed efforts by himself and Disney.

The director revealed to entertainment news blog WENN that he still planned to bring the project to the Broadway stage, commenting, "I think it would make a great musical. I think the songs As You Wish and Inconceivable, and The Battle of Wits just jump out at you."

The romantic comedy fantasy adventure film was directed and co-produced by Reiner and was based on the 1973 novel of the same name by William Goldman. In the movie, the story unfolds as a book being read by a grandfather (Peter Falk) to his sick grandson, played by Fred Savage. Cary Elwes and Robin Wright also starred as the romantic leads, as did the late André the Giant, Mandy Patinkin and Billy Crystal.

This film comes in at number 88 on The American Film Institute's (AFI) "AFI's 100 Years...100 Passions" list of the 100 greatest film love stories. Since its cinema debut, The Princess Bride has developed into somewhat of a cult film.

While no further details on casting have been revealed, the site reports that Reiner had approached composer Randy Newman and musician John Mayer about writing the score for the show, but both had declined. In 2006, Tony award-winning composer Adam Guettel and author William Goldman announced their own plans to turn the film into a musical, however the project never came to fruition due to reported contract disputes.

More recently, in November 2013, Disney announced plans to partner with Goldman on the musical adaptation, and even launched a website this February to provide eager fans with updates. As of now, no updates have been posted on the site.

At the time, Alan Horn, chairman of Walt Disney Studios who lent his expertise on the oriignal film, shared, "To now have a stage production of this film in development at Disney is honestly a dream come true," adding, "My involvement in The Princess Bride goes back to 1987 and it has always been close to my heart."
