Variety reports that Paramount, Skydance and Annapurna Pictures have announced that the next entry to THE TERMINATOR franchise will hit theaters on June 26, 2015. The action thriller is expected to feature Arnold Schwarzenegger in a return to his iconic role.

The screeplay will be penned by Laeta Kalorgridis and Patrick Lussier with Annapurna's Megan Ellison and Skydance's David Ellison producing. No plot details have been revealed.

The project will be competing against a host of other action adventure films already announced for the summer of 2015, including "Star Wars VII," "Independence Day 2," "Pirates of the Caribbean 5" and "The Avengers 2".

The original Terminator topped the American box office for two weeks and helped launch the film career of James Cameron and solidify that of Schwarzenegger. Three sequels have since been produced: Terminator 2: Judgment Day(1991), Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003), and Terminator Salvation (2009), as well as a television series, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (2008-2009).
