Laura Dern, Bebe Neuwirth & More to Be Honored at GSFF
On June 6, 2014 Twentieth Century Fox will release The Fault in Our Stars, the anxiously awaited adaptation of John Green's bestseller, starring 2014's "It Girl," Shailene Woodley, as a teen battling cancer while falling in love for the first time. Laura Dern plays her protective mother; and Scott Neustadter, one half of Hollywood's hottest screenwriting team, adapted the book for the film. They will both be feted at the 12th Annual Garden State Film Festival on April 6th in Atlantic City. Ms. Dern will receive the Independent Spirit Award and Margate native, Mr. Neustadter, will receive the Spirit of New Jersey Award.
The Fault in Our Stars novel was a critically acclaimed international bestseller with over 1,000,000 copies sold. As such, the screen rights were coveted and ultimately acquired by 20th Century Fox. For film adaptation they turned to Margate, New Jersey native Scott Neustadter and his writing partner Michael H. Weber. Their very first script, (500) Days of Summer, was optioned and became a critical and commercial hit starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel. It was nominated for "Best Feature - Comedy" at the Golden Globe Awards and earned an Independent Spirit Award and a Golden Satellite Award for Best Screenplay of the Year.
They received accolades and honors for 2013's The Spectacular Now, also starring Shailene Woodley. The Neustadter-Weber team is currently involved in several high profile projects including an adaptation of the best-selling Rules of Civility by Amor Towles for Lionsgate; Where'd You Go, Bernadette, based on Maria Semple's critically acclaimed novel for Annapurna Pictures; Royal Wedding at Sony; Underage, through Ivan Reitman's Montecito Pictures; and Rosaline, a comedy version of Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet."
Last year's GSFF Lifetime Achievement Winner, Diane Ladd, is the mother of Ms. Dern and will present the Independent Spirit Award to her daughter at the Awards Dinner. Ms. Dern is also the daughter of Bruce Dern, a 2014 Oscar nominee for Best Actor in Nebraska. Known for a diverse and acclaimed body of work, Ms. Dern has appeared in dozens of thought-provoking independent films from Mask in 1985 to The Master in 2012, as well as blockbusters like the Jurassic Park series. For HBO's acclaimed series Enlightened, she recently won the Golden Globe Award for "Best Actress in a Television Series, Comedy" and was nominated for an Emmy Award as well.
In 1992, Ms. Dern received both an Academy Award nomination and a Golden Globe nomination in 1992 for her title performance in Rambling Rose. Also in 1992, Ms. Dern received the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress, as well as Emmy and Cable ACE nominations for her starring role in the 1992 telefilm Afterburn. Early in her career, she won the 1985 Los Angeles Film Critics' New Generation Award for her performances in Smooth Talk and Mask.
"It is a happy coincidence that we can bring together two integral creative forces behind The Fault in Our Stars and are delighted to screen its trailer throughout the festival thanks to 20th Century Fox," says Diane Raver, Founder and Executive Director of the festival.
