Writer/actor Harvey Fierstein pays a holiday visit to Theater Talk. He has returned to the Broadway's Hairspray for the final month of the musical's successful run, playing "Edna Turnblad," the role that he originated in the hit show over 6 years ago.

Harvey Fierstein returned to his Tony-winning role as the greatest 'Broadway' mother of them all, Edna Turnblad in Hairspray on Tuesday, November 11th. 

Harvey Fierstein is the author of Torch Song Trilogy, for which he received Tony Awards for Best Play and Best Actor. He is also the recipient of the Tony Award for his book of the musical La Cage Aux Folles. His other plays include Safe Sex, Spookhouse and Forget Him.

Harvey's most recent Broadway credits include his acclaimed work in the recent musical A Catered Affair, starring as Tevye in the record-breaking revival of Fiddler on the Roof, and as Edna Turnblad in Hairspray, for which he won his fourth Tony Award (Best Actor in a Musical). He also recreated his role of Edna in the Las Vegas production of Hairspray.

Other honors include three Drama Desk Awards, the Drama League Award, the New York Magazine Award, a special Obie, Theater World and L.A. Drama Critics Circle Awards. He has also been nominated for an Emmy ("Cheers" guest star), American Comedy Award (Mrs. Doubtfire) and London's Olivier Award (Torch Song Trilogy). Harvey won the Humanitas Award in 2000 for writing the HBO animated special "The Sissy Duckling," which is also published as a children¹s book. Fierstein has also appeared in numerous film and television productions.

Hairspray, the hit Tony Award-winning Best Musical, will close at the Neil SimonTheatre after the performance on Sunday, January 4, 2009, after having played 2,641 performances and 31 previews.Theater Talk, the series devoted to the world of the stage, is co-hosted by Michael Riedel (Broadway columnist for the New York Post) and series producer Susan Haskins.
