Guillermo del Toro has confirmed that a osequel to Universal's blockbuster PACIFIC RIM, tentatively titled "Pacific Rim 2," is heading to 3-D and Imax on April 7, 2017! According to BuzzFeed, Zak Penn will write the script along with del Toro, while Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni of Legendary Pictures and Mary Parent, Callum Green and del Toro will serve as producers.
"The characters I love will return," del Toro told BuzzFeed. "Raleigh, Mako, Newt, Gottlieb and who knows, maybe even Hannibal Chau - but we are taking them into a fresh territory that will display amazing sights and battles. The first film set the stage and now we're ready to have a blast."
According to the report, work is already underway on the sequel as del Toro finishes up post-production on his next film, "Crimson Peak."
PACIFIC RIM opened in 3D, 2D and Imax theaters on July 12, 2013 and grossed more than $400 million worldwide. The film starred Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Ron Perlman, Robert Kazinsky, Max Martini, Clifton Collins, Jr., Burn Gorman, Larry Joe Campbell, Brad William Henke and Diego Klattenhoff.
In the film, when legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Kikuchi)-who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from The Past . Together, they stand as mankind's last hope against the mounting apocalypse.
